The Mrs. and I went north for her cousin’s wedding and stopped at several thrift/charity stores in the area. We were able to pick up 23 titles for $13.75 total. Here are some of the more interesting - at least to me.
When I first saw this one, I started not to give it much of a thought but then looked at the back and found that it contained four silent Douglas Fairbanks classics - The Thief of Bagdad, The Three Musketeers, The Iron Mask, and Robin Hood. I thought that was well worth the extravagant $2.00 thrift store price tag.
I have certainly seen this one before though and often thought of purchasing it but would never have been able to beat the 50 cents I paid for it so I’m glad I waited. For me, this is probably director Jean-Jacques Annaud’s best film (of those that I’ve seen). Plus, it’s Connery.
My latest blurays:
She Killed in Ecstasy
A Night Has a Thousand Desires
Female Vampire
And also the already mentioned Obscene Mirror which I pre-ordered from Severin.
Asa, glad to see that you decided to buy ‘Ice Station Zebra’ on BD. One of those cold war ‘epics’ from the '60’s, complete with an Overture, Intermission, and Exit Music. You can’t go wrong with high calibre actors like Patrick McGoohan, Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown, and Rock Hudson…
For my money, one of the best spy/submarine films out there.
The ‘Pitch Black’ dvd will do me until I can get it on BD for a decent price…I’ve only recently discovered the Vin Diesel ‘Riddick’ trilogy, but I’m thoroughly enjoying each one…
Tough Sci-Fi with an edge…
I’m used to calling them Goodwill Stores here in the States, but I love hearing Charity Shop from my UK friends and think it’s a much better term for that type of business.
DiabolikDVD still had some copies of this one in stock, so I snagged it up before it was really OOP
Love Carl Th. Dreyer, such an amazing silent filmmaker. I’m gonna double dip and get the Criterion Blu Ray too, mainly to get the book with the Sheridan Le Fanu short story and Dreyer’s original script.
From Sicario to Hell or High Water to Wind River to Yellowstone, writer/director Taylor Sheridan has been extremely solid so far so I’m willing to give this one a chance, despite what the critics say.
