When people are discussing great Kubrick films, I don’t think this one gets enough attention. For me, this is the movie where he first really put it all together and I love the performance of Elisha Cook Jr. as poor George Peatty.
Those needing shopping inspiration, here are links to some “recent” or not so recent reviews I wrote for FC
Did you see they wanted customers to send photographic evidence that they’d destroyed their faulty Citizen Kane disc? I found it amusing but understandable, since it’s Criterion.
The Killing is top 3 Kubrick for me.
Plenty of folks take issue with the company’s record on color correction…
New blu-rays:

ITV is presently screening an adaption of Len Deighton’s ‘The Ipcress File’, on a Sunday evening. It’s not bad, as productions go, but, IMHO, not a patch on the 1965 film version starring Michael Caine as agent, Harry Palmer…which features an iconic soundtrack by John Barry, no political correctness, and provides us with a unique snapshot of 60’s Swinging London.
At the time, a spy film in stark, dark, contrast to the flashy James Bond films…
A couple of new additions:
Elio Petri’s 1970 critically acclaimed Crime Drama with Gian Maria Volante and Florinda Bolkan
A classic 1971 Giallo starring Tomas Milian from My Name is Pecos director Maurizio Lucidi
Nice pick-ups. Got both of these myself. Investigation of a Citizen is such a clever and, in its own way, witty film that both pokes fun at corruption and takes it seriously. I originally had the Shameless UK DVD of Designated Victim that I never actually sat down and watched, just checked out the picture quality of, which wasn’t that bad to be honest. I’ll be popping in that Blu Ray soon myself.

Pre-ordered (due out in April/June):

I’m hoping the BFI 4K presentation of The Proposition adequately replaces my DVD and my blu-ray of the same film (the blu has a better picture, the DVD has better extras).
There are two or three pre-orders from 88Films interesting me but they’re so unreliable with their release dates, I think I’d rather just wait until they’re out.

Never seen any Kurosawa film yet, so I’m looking forward to watching these. Especially Yojimbo, for reasons you all know.
Got this box-set myself. It’s well worth having…good choice. ![]()
If you’ve never watched Kurosawa, these five films are certainly a great place to start!
Yojimbo and Sanjuro make a great double feature. The ending climax of Sanjuro is just perfect
