Horror Films

Hmm…one of the best Euro horror movies I’ve ever seen would be “Don’t Look Now.”

But this one looks intriguing. Anyone seen?

Yes, a good and unusual film.

Iron Rose looks interesting visually and psychologically. Too bad the plot doesn’t seem to make any sense, but i’ll probably end up checking it out anyway.
The menu screens for the X rated kult dvd look nicer than the redemption releases though.

Assignment Terror - Watched it this evening, it was quite fun.

Michael Rennie plays a being from another world whose planet is dying, his aim is to destroy the humans of Earth so his beings can take over as it is the right climate for them.

In his aim to do this he resurrects The Wolfman (Paul Naschy’s as his Waldemar Daninsky character), The Mummy, Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster to help him in his cause…

Inspector Tobermann (Craig Hill) does his best to intervene.

A great cheesy bit of Euro Horror, recommended.

The German DVD release had a trailer for Umberto Lenzi’s BROTHERS TILL WE DIE (Which was in English), let’s hope they release it.

-Decided to re-watch Far Cry, in honour of the premier of Udo Kier’s starring-role in Iron Sky at the Berlin International Film Festival, currently happening.

Far Cry starts-right-up with a logical military setup, then follows it with a logical setup for ex-commando; Til Schweiger, as a charter-boat owner who plies the waters near a supposedly deserted ‘lumber mill’. Keir is using the base to create an army of super-soldiers, but that plot-aspect isn’t handled sloppily. It’s presented intelligently, and the action is non-lethargic as possible. Plus there’s literally boatloads of ‘comic relief’, as well as some badass femmes. Far Cry isn’t the greatest, but it’s a solid bit of entertainment.

The Triangle, 2009…

Remember the final episode of The Prisoner, when Drake (6) discovers that Number-1 is a psycho in an ape-suit? Something like that: chaos unleashed, should’ve happened here. The film morphs from a horror-suspense theme into an enigmatic Lynchian puzzler too easily. -Which is okay except for the closed-loop ending/beginning. Tweak the accident a bit, and add another 30-minutes… this project may’ve become even more of a classic. The ship needed to become ‘a character’, probably handled via sound-effects and lonely interior-shots. My brain kept trying to weave The Bermuda Triangle legend into the film-fabric…

As more often with Cronenberg, I have mixed feelings about this SF shocker about murdering mutant dwarfs.

The film is a slow starter, but once the little creatures start hammering people down, it offers some real scares. But Cronenberg is one of those directors who often destroys what he has created himself, and in this case the tension is broken by too much madness and effects that are more gory than scary. The idea of traumatic memories having psychosomatic consequences and creating physical changes is interesting, at least in the context of the horror movie, but Cronenberg once again pushes things too far when he has Samantha Eggar eating her own afterbirth. That’s just tasteless and not what I’m looking for, not even in a horror movie.

Samantha Eggar is nevertheless great as the psychic mother. Oliver Reed is miscast as the professor of psychoplasmics (whatever that may be).

3/5, should have been 4/5

Use to like the film, but went a little stale for me. Shivers is my favourite of his 70’s work now.

It takes some twenty minutes to get going, the last twenty minutes are way over the top, but the fifty minutes in between are great

I have just started Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. It is the sixth in the franchise and not as bad as I feared it would be. The opening’s impressive, although the rejigged theme tune doesn’t sound nearly as great as the original. I have heard the producer’s cut is better; does anyone know anything about it?

I have seen the Producer’s cut. It is a bit better and adds more coherency to the story, but I think its still a weak installment of the series IMO.

I prefer stuff like Halloween , Friday 13th , the old Hammer movies , in fact anything pre - 1990 [Although I have some after that date].

I abhor the cannibal movies , zombies movies , and stuff like Ilsa - She Wolf Of The SS . Today’s horrors are a bit too bloodthirsty for me , i guess i’m feeling my age these days. ;D

If anyone wants to see the list of horrors i have in my collection , then i will post it here.

i’ve been thinking recently
about horror movies
it certainly was caused by my unexpected theatre visitation - Sinister was quite a good horror but can’t say it scared me - actually most scary about it were few high volume sound effects and that is pretty lousy scare
anyway i asked myself are there horrors out there which can scare me?
i’ve seen all of popular series like Elm Street, Hellraiser, 13th Friday, Halloween and so on - and these movies are out of the question
anyway, i’m not expert on horror films and now i’m quite lazy to go through pages of this topic, so guys, could you recommend me some of your favorites (no Leprechauns, Gremlins) (no, not even Critters)

and honestly most scary film moments i’ve encountered recently were in sitcom Mighty Boosh - recommended

Off the top of my head, some faves are;

Carnival Of Souls
Dementia 13
Dark Night Of The Scarecrow
Ju On
Ghost Story
