Thanks, will definitely take you up on the offer if such a dastardly situation rears its head.

yet I have a hard time understanding these credit card policies. isn’t that what credit cards are for, to pay on the internet no matter which country? hm…

Yeah it really makes no sense… speaking from job experience I know from the merchant’s point of view its harder to verify billing information on a foreign card to make sure its not a fraudulent purchase… banks from other countries often won’t verify anything with you and the usual verification system doesn’t work on foreign cards. I know that banks sometimes reject foreign purchases for the same reasons, as fraud checks- and you have to call your bank to tell them its a valid purchase and they will remove the block

other than that, I can’t see any reasons for it

it’s visa/mastercard, those aren’t even “foreign” companies. and Amazon is anything but a shady company… i dont get it

Even if its visa/mastercard or any other large credit company, it still routes through local banks. So I have a Mastercard debit/check card but its still issued by my local bank down the street. The same applies to actual credit cards, if you call the phone number on the back of the card it goes to a bank located somewhere in the country you are from, which is where the card is issued. If you living in Germany buy something from the company I work for, I have to call your card issuer in Germany to verify the billing information. In some countries like the UK, all banks will refuse to verify anything with a merchant… so you basically have to decide if it looks like a valid purchase or run the risk of it being fraudulent after you sold the goods, and the card company will take the money back from you as the merchant, leaving you screwed and out the money

This is probably why some foreign companies are hard to buy products from… they simply don’t want to run the risk of losing money from potentially fraudulent purchases

Amazon isn’t a shady company, but a bank seeing a charge come up from any company outside of the country the card holder lives in looks suspicious to most banks, and some banks will block all suspicious activity on the account. Usually this can be solved by calling your bank/card issuer
