Leone once said, that Volonte was acting to aggressive with a little bit to much overacting. So he let him made some scenes several times to make him tired before he turned the camera on.
Leone also later admitted it was a mistake to be too controlling over Volonte’s performance. Volonte later showed his amazing range in the criminally underrated A Bullet for the General, which I noticed gets better with each viewing and has become one of my favourite films.
Volonte was definitely one of Italy’s finest actors, the overacting is due to him being a theatre actor first and foremost (who made films for the pay cheque primarily, unless they were projects that strongly aligned with his political convictions). He later dropped the overacting due to criticism, but I find the films where he overacts are his more memorable works.
Tuco was perfectly cast with Wallach, as Wallach brings that perfect playful “naughty boy” look (that makes him a lovable character, and made his decisions to spare the heros in Magnificent 7 at least somewhat believable).
I wish we had more SWs starring either of them, but Wallach was already underused given his talent.
