That’s such a fascinating (if confusing) concept; I’m intrigued as to how you can have a progressive (sic) spelling of a word?
This ‘progressive’ spelling was supposed to be as ‘phonological’ as possible, which means they tried to copy the sound of the word in the spelling of it. To give you a few examples, using English words:
Wednesday would become wensday
leopard > lepperd
jeopardy < jepperdy etc.
house, mouse would become hous, mous (the e is superfluous) etc. etc.
communist (adjective) is in Dutch ‘communistisch’, but in the progressive spelling this became ‘kommunisties’
Dutch official spelling rules have been altered on several occasions; instead of making things easier, they only complicated them. My mother had learned ‘bosch’ (meaning: forest) and ‘loopen’ (to walk) in school, and kept spelling the word like this, even though the official spelling had become ‘bos’ and ‘lopen’.
I felt bad laughing at times in this.. the kid from Spy Kids is an amazing actor.. and Robin Williams reactions to some things are priceless
I love comedies that bring up mixed feelings about what you’re laughing at, so much truer to real life than most of the genre, and when a film manages to do this while still being actually funny (as opposed to simply weird or depressing), its a pretty impressive feat.
Watched The Auteur (2008) directed by James Westby, director of Film Geek and also starring Melik Malkasian in the lead role as porn director Arturo Domingo - a well known hardcore filmmaker who is struggling with his now-flailing career due to personal issues and self destructive habits.
Pretty funny, particularly if you enjoy any sex films, and also functions well apart from its comedic value. Still, not as good as I’d hoped going in.
Looking to watch Westby’s “Rid of Me” but looks like I will have to renew my Netflix membership first, or buy the dvd.
Watched Alex van Warmerdam’s Abel - at first I thought it might be too dry for me, although I often love dry humor, but by the scene above it had really drawn me in and I was laughing pretty well at this point. Definitely a unique comedy, particularly for being made in 1986 whereas these Abel types of characters have become more commonplace now days. The use of the model sets was a nice touch that added a bit of surrealism to the atmosphere.
Glad you liked it!
Hear hear
My all time favourite comedy movie is -
Tough Guys [1986]
[Burt Lancaster/Kirk Douglas/Eli Wallach]
Kirk and Burt are excellent as usual but Eli as the myopic hit-man has me in stitches every time i watch it.
The scene after he comes out of sewers and the one when he is on the train at the end are the best .
Watched Pineapple Express - second viewing and enjoyed more than the first time. Still, for some reason seems not as good as it should be. Actors give good performances but the writing is a bit limited and too obvious all over. Find myself wanting to like this one more than actually being taken with it. Still an enjoyable watch though and seems like it will hold some rewatchability for a while.
Also re-viewed The Foot Fist Way. Danny McBride is great at playing this character, almost would like to have seen him as the lead in Observe & Report instead of Rogen.
Guess I’ll have to take a look at Eastbound & Down also.
One I just randomly remembered and really like: Heathers (1988)
Yes not bad that one, reminds me I must view it again sometime
Speaking of Seth Rogen and James Franco, I watched This Is the End yesterday. Great fun!
oh yes, that’s great fun, and also World’s End is good one
Mentioned it somewhere on here already I think, but recently watched This Is The End and also loved it… really funny and different kind of film.
Last night I watched Clear History which is a 2013 film starring Larry David in his usual kind of role. It was co-written by Larry David and directed by Greg Mottola, who directed Superbad, Adventureland and Paul (another comedy that I really like). Pretty funny, stranger plot than usual LD stuff, but still same kinda character as his Curb Your Enthusiasm stuff. Not quite as good as Curb, but still a fun viewing. Lots of actors in this film- Michael Keaton, Danny McBride, Kate Hudson, Philip Baker Hall, Jon Hamm, Eva Mendes, Amy Ryan, Bill Hader and J. B. Smoove.
Michael Keaton’s role is a tad bit of Beetlejuice.
Have to admit that comedies rarely float my boat.
Yes, I’m a stick in the mud… :
I saw Bad Grandpa recently. Not a cinematic masterpiece but I haven’t laughed so much in a long time!
I didn’t like that one. I tried going in with an open mind, but it just wasn’t for me. :-\
Have you seen Some Like it Hot? Never thought I’d be mentioning it in the same thread as Bad Grandpa. I’m sure Billy Wilder is rolling over in his grave right now! That is a great movie and very funny
I have to admit to never having seen it.
I’ll accept your recommendation, though, and will rectify that soon. I’m desperate for a good laugh!
Speaking of Spanish comedies: Torrente. Just thinking about this character makes me laugh out loud.
Just saw the first one… now I see why it spawned so many sequels, the character is so messed up, but hilarious… and the movie plays out perfectly, pretty hard to find any faults
