Yes, although he’s 87 years old, his output is still considerable. I completely lost track of his ever-expanding Incal universe. Four or five years ago he changed his French publisher from Les Humanoïdes Associés to Glénat. So his “Sons of El Topo” might not be published by Humanoids. Were his last comics translated into English at all? Like Bouncer, books 8 and 9, or the sequel to The White Lama?
Read Les Fils d’El Topo yesterday. New story starts right after the end of the film and focuses on Caïn and Abel, the protagonist’s two sons. To prevent Caïn from killing his half-brother, El Topo, the saint, has condemned him to become “invisible,” meaning others aren’t allowed to look at him or talk to him. As a pariah Caïn roams the West, leaving behind a trail of destruction and death, while Abel works as a puppeteer, performing shows for children with his mother. Before she dies, she demands to be buried next to El Topo – a task the two half-brothers have to complete together. – Familiar Jodo blend of religion and philosophy, sex and violence, metaphysics and dark humor; panache and paltriness. Beautiful, if somewhat generic art by Mexican cartoonist José Ladrönn. Caïn is the first part of a trilogy and will be followed by Abel and Abelcaïn.
Caïn’s trauma on film and paper
Les Fils d’El Topo in English:
I wasn’t aware of this comic, thanks for posting
Wow, 90 years old!
I enjoyed the first part, Caïn (2016), but found the second, Abel (2019), even better. Forsooth, a Jodo yarn with no holds barred: sex ’n’ magic ’n’ violence in abundance, plus bearded nuns and cherub-winged bandidos. I just hope it won’t take Jodorowsky and Ladrönn another three years to complete the final album of their envisaged trilogy.
Has anyone got the Arrow release?
I bought it recently. It says ‘English soundtrack’ on the cover…. But when playing I only get Spanish?
I hope so, might be one of my top ten Spaghetti Westerns of all time. (Though I’ve heard some folks on here say it doesn’t technically count as one).
not just not technically
I checked my Arrow copy. Bought about 1 year ago.
Same problem with me, unfortunately.
That’s a massive shame. I wonder if they forgot to add the English Audio!?
I contacted Arrow. Turns out the English dub is in the special features oops!
Seems like an easy mistake to make. Why would they put it in the special features but and not in the audio setup bit like usual? I’m sure plenty other got stumped with that too
just seen a review on Amazon with some guy saying the same thing about the Spanish only audio…… so, yeah you’re right, I’m not alone lol.
French publisher Glénat will release all three albums of Les Fils d’El Topo (The Sons of El Topo) in one volume in November, including a 4K version of El Topo.
My french may be rusty but it’s a DVD that’s included, based on a 4k master
Strange, isn’t it?
Why strange? That’s probably all they were able to pay for in terms of license
I find it strange that Glénat is including the film on DVD and not on Blu-ray or in both formats.
