Django Kill … If You Live, Shoot! / Se sei vivo spara (Giulio Questi, 1967)

I think Fistful is the most violent of the Leone westerns (Duck You Sucker has some violent parts also) but I think Corbucci’s westerns are more physcologicaly violent and rather gory at the same time, at least Django and TGS.

Correct Silence.

But Corbucci shows a lot more and because of the clear mood and atmosphere, he does establish a strong physcological bond with the violence he films.

The scene where Django gets his hands crushed is both bloody and gruesome, so quite nasty

No wonder it was banned in the 60s in some markets

Navajo Joe is also a pretty violent Corbucci movie, although not exactly bloody

I agree Korano.

Nasty is the right word! I was shocked when I saw Django for the first time, as I had only seen the Leone films I was totally unprepared for everything in it.

My version is a VHS and I saw in a film guide that uncut it is 100 minutes long.

Yes the uncut FoD version runs 100 min. But if your VHS is Pal then it’s most likely also uncut with 96 min.

I have wanted to see this movie for many years ever since I read about somewhere in the pre-internet days. I finally watched it (116 min uncut version) and was extremely disappointed. As someone above said it is over rated and over hyped. I had to watch it in two parts, because it couldn’t keep my interest. The music was extremely annoying. I kept thinking the whole time I was watching it “What’s the point?”. It sure isn’t entertainment.

Good thing I waited a couple of days to post this or my “review” could have been really negative.

Welcome to the forum Harlock! IMO the point with the film is that it doesn’t have a point.

Django Kills is an anti western which was made amongst other things to frustrate a typical western audience. So the surprise is for me that still so many here in this forum like this film.

In an interview Questi said that Se sei vivo spara is a polemic against the American myth of masculinity. He also says that he rebels against the conception to make an infantile film in the manner of the Italian westerns or a copy of American examples.

But if all of these films were Leone clones, this would get boring very quickly. I enjoy this one quite a bit m’self.

Me too

It’s quintessential Sixties art cinema - designed/disguised as a genre piece to confound and frustrate the viewer, as much as to entertain. Questi and Arcalli are playing games with us, just as Leone was playing games with the Western format in his particular way.

I agree - having every movie copy what Leone did would grow tiresome very quickly. While this movie is not my favorite I do appreciate it for being very different.

Reminds me of Godard’s Weekend from the same year. Also very good. And bizarre!

I fully agree, Frank.

It is different and really well made. There are great scenes and the atmosphere is very special. The parts with the nutty wife are very interesting and have a strong gothic vibe.

…and I really love the title tune.

I was not found of this years ago, but do like now though.

I agree with Frank too. And the nutty wife wasn’t really nutty :-.

Is there an uncensored version of this film available or is the original version really lost forever?
