At first my dim memories of reading Gogol’s prose poem as a teenager made a film adaptation seem improbable. It’s quite long and was planned to span three volumes, but sadly although Gogol wrote the second part, he burned it before publication, and what remains was reconstructed from his notes. However, considering the basic plot outline - mysterious stranger arrives in small town in pursuit of ‘deal souls’ - and the Gothic S/W title, perhaps it’s not so hard to imagine Cox doing something interesting with it.
I have all Alex Cox’s films and I’ll look forward to this one. It’s his first full length movie since 2017’s ‘Tombstone-Rashamon’ retold ‘The Gunfight At The O.K. Corral’ in the style of Kurosawa’s 1960 film. That got poor reviews but I thought it was an interesting experiment.
