I was browsing the database for spaghvember inspiration, and found Copperhead. So, that became this evening’s western.

Here are my thoughts.

Copperhead tells the story of a town that is not only plagued by a ruthless gang, but soon also has to deal with a veritable swarm of snakes.

The beasts don’t come to make friends. Led by a mysterious gunslinger, the town engages in a bloody battle with the deadly snakes…

Unsightly trash western, shot in Bulgaria. And then this is not even the worst SyFy production.

The best actor in the cast is Billy Drago, so then I don’t need to name the rest of the cast, really. But synchronized swimmer Wendy Carter, who would later play a screaming mother in iCarly (uncredited), does a nice job. Lead actor Brad Johnson, however, has the charisma of a potato.

The visual is a poor Sergio Leone imitation, while the music is weak Ennio Morricone plagiarism. This was in line with expectations. The dialogues are atrocious, but it is funny when a pistolero talks tough to a giant snake.

Of course, a SyFy movie is not about saloons, whores and gunslingers. Here the snakes have to do it, and they slither right, from the computer, onto your screen. Pretty funny when the vermin get shot up or, even better, make their own victims. They bite, strangle and swallow whole!

The visual effects are mostly pretty worthless. The exploding saloon, for example, hurts the eyes.

As mentioned, most of the snakes are computer-generated. They do not convince at all. Therefore, there are also some rubber ones, adding some ‘realism’.

Some of the gags are actually funny, but they are not with many. In this regard the ending is ok, but most of it should have been left on the cutting table.

Sounds dreadful , as is the case with most of these low budget ‘westerns’ of the past 20 years … I wonder in a further 20 or 30 will they be viewed with some affection or even cult appeal … hard to say.
