Compañeros / Vamos a matar, compañeros (Sergio Corbucci, 1970)

Just saw the movie again last week. I am not too fond of the movie. It takes too long to introduce the main character and the “forming” of Vasco takes too long and can be done better. I think when you compare “Companeros” to “Face to Face” or “The Mercenary” the last two have a better story composition. The movies are more logical.
Also the music of both other films are more supporting.

I think The Mercenary is a little bit better than the remake Companeros, but both films are great spaghettiwesterns and are among Corbucci’s best.

Companeros is not a “remake”. its a follow up on the revolution theme

Well whatever you want to call it, these two films are similar to one another, that’s a known fact.

nobody’s saying they’re not similar. but they aren’t remakes of each other. fafdm is not a remake of afod just because they are “similar”. corbucci just made two revolution films, with similar character set ups

But can you call fafdm and afod similar?

yes ancor bay’s copaneros release is fantastic it has interveiws with milan, nero and morricone. some great info in these interveiws.

yeah, I have it also. great stuff. the new Starlight relase in germany contains the same version on disc 2 btw, for those in need of a german language track/subtitles

‘Companeros’ is a very good SW but is not among my favorites. I like it anyway, it just didn’t hit me like other flics did. Interesting to see a very young Iris Berben in this one !!!

Certainly among Corbucci’s best !!!

yeah Berben is really interesting LOL

just rewatched it. what a nice film. full of great dialoge, characters and cinematography

This is a good 'un, especially the end but I was a little bit sad when the beardy bought it

This is my favourite non-Leone spaghetti - yes, it’s practically a remake of Corbucci’s earlier Il Mercenario, but it gets by on it’s charm, sweeping Morricone score and one of the best pairings to hit the silver screen, in Nero and Milian.

Sergio Corbucci is a pretty much unappreciated figure, outside of genre journalism - an absolute travesty; he made a succession of wonderfully entertaining films and definitely needs to be afforded a lot more respect.

Its not remake the message of the movies are totaly different. The Movies seems to be the same but they aren’t …

Not a remake in the strictest sense, but the films have a lot in common, this is a fact!

I do agree but so many Westerns have a likeness of each other, here’s a strange way of summing them up.

This will throw you.

They are very similar but very diffrent!#!?!!

No Honestly, they are both superb and both would definately be in my top 10 Spaghettis.

Each of the 2 films have their own merits and Corbucci (even though most choose Sollima) is my second favourite spaghetti director after Leone.

Even though the Leone’s are undoubtedly superior no one can do “Action” in a spaghetti like corbucci.
Nero with a Gatling gun mowing down countless people. I don’t even think the Americans did anything like this until the 80’s action extravaganzas!

You’re right, I think it’s because they’re by the same director that people are arguing about it.

But they’re both great like you say

Yes Corbucci is really great, in some ways I even prefer him to Leone!

Leone originated the sw genre, and had an eye for detail like no other!

He also had a great sense of humour, when it didn’t go over-the-top

But Corbucci’s films have tighter stories, better staged action, and some really outstanding features!

Like the scenery in Great Silence and Gli Specialisti, or the apocalyptic atmosphere in Django!

The endings in his films are also far from conventional, and often very down-beat, I like that!

yeah but corbucci took a look time to find his style. he made lots of crap in the beginning
