Can anyone really follow Sartana movies?

My current widescreen version is 96 minutes long but i originally had a full screen version which had 2 additional scenes. One of the missing scenes is the first showdown in the church in which an unlucky gambler is gunned down. This scenario is reprised to include Sartana near the films conclusion. The other missing scene occurs round about when the plot shifts to the gambling town but i can barely remember anything about it apart from a collage of flashing bright lights introducing us to the casino.

The fullscreen dvd was such dreadful quality that i gave it away upon acquiring the w/s dvd which i regret now.

Anyway i’ll give my current copy another look and comment on your reconstruction shortly.

A very minor point, but this was probably part of the frame-up. Pretty sure it was the fake Sartana who shot the other robbers to avoid getting caught and splitting the money. Also Dynamite Butch was killed, not suicide, again covering tracks. Keep it up Colonel, you’re right on track.

Ok here are two things I don’t understand so far:

Bill Cochran was apparently killed along with the other robbers in the hideout. Yet next thing we know he’s been captured and put in jail. I guess he just managed to survive right?

Also, if the fake Sartana killed the others, you see a rifle being fired and the fake sartana wasn’t carrying a rifle at the time. hmmm.

I’ll get back to you guys with the continuation.

Yeah the infamous “Vegas lights” scene has been cut from most versions and doesn’t add anything to the story.

If you mean the rifleman who shot Bill Cochran, that was Slim Shotgun, who was later killed (we don’t see it) again to cover thier tracks. They told Slim’s brother that Sartana killed Slim, hoping he would then kill Sartana, and he did try.

Not entirely sure how Cochran wound up in jail rather than dead either. May see if i can find anything about that.

Here is the rest of my summary. I also made notes of parts of the plot I didn’t understand. These points are in bold.

So he speaks with Cochran, and cochran tells him some info (I didn’t catch everything he said), that the man behind the robbery (the fake sartana?) can be found in poker falls. He also mentioned that Morley(?). I’m also assuming that the fake sartana was the one who opened fire on all the robberers. Cochran is killed by an unknown sniper before he can reveal who the fake sartana is. The sheriff comes in and Sartana attempts to prove that he wasn’t the killer.

Buddy ben and hot dead than discuss about sharing the reward for Sartana. They flip a coin to see who goes into the Sheriff’s office where they think Sartana is (I think), and hot dead goes. But Buddy ben just set up hot dead to be seen coming out of the sheriff’s office in front of the posse, who thinks he killed Cochran and let Sartana go.

*This doesn’t seem to make sense as Sartana was never let go, he’s with the Sheriff.

The Sheriff and Sartana are scene riding together as the sheriff is escorting Sartana to the trial and he claims that he’s doing sartana a favor by keeping him away from the bounty hunters. The sheriff tells sartana that the bullet was meant for him, not cochran.

They stop by an inn and the sheriff and his deputy keep guard over sartana. Using some magic tricks sartana manages to knock them out and escape.

Hot dead is next seen taking a stagecoach which is attacked by bandits. Hot dead shoots them all.

49:00

Sartana visits homer, the store owner that made his derringer and demands to know who else he sold it to. Homer says that he sold some to Baxter red and a group of people passing through. Sartana meets Baxter red, the owner of a gambling house and notices that others also have his cylinder. He wins at craps when he sees the dealer cheating. Baxter red notices that Sartana is gambling with stolen money from the northwestern bank that he got from bill cochran.

Meanwhile homer gets beat up by unknown assailents because he talked and because he failed to live up to his promise of sartana being killed before arriving at poker falls.

• hmm I don’t remember anyone trying to kill sartana on his way to poker falls.

Sartana arrives in poker falls and checks into the hotel gets attacked but kills his would be assailents. A phony sheriff comes in and introduces himself, telling sartana that Bill cochran used to work as a bouncer at the amusement park owned by the judge.

Hot dead arrives in poker falls on the stagecoach.
• I don’t know how he found out that sartana was in poker falls

The judge is currently hiring for new bouncers. Sartana walks in the office and shows him the stolen wad of bills from the bank. Judge tells him that Cochran used to work for him but disaapeared. On his way out of the amusement park a group of gunmen hired by homer attempt to kill sartana but fail. Sartana ends up back in the amusement park and homer has him trapped. Hot dead shows up and saves sartana by killing homer because he wants sartana for himself. Hot dead and sartana play a hand and sartana wins so hot dead leaves him alone.

Sartana and buddy ben discuss that the imposter sartana wants to kill the real sartana to get all of the stolen loot.

*But doesn’t he already have the stolen loot?

Sartana kills a gunman in the barbershop who was told that sartana killed his brother slim shotgun and he was seeking revenge. Sartana tells the dying man that he wasn’t the one that did it and the gunman says that he should’ve killed the liars instead.

The judge witnesses the killing and looks through sartana’s hotel room (possibly for the money) but finds buddy ben. Ben and sartana kick the judge out of the room.

Sartana and buddy ben visit slim shotgun’s grave and see that he was the one that killed cochran because they find his sniper rifle.

Sartana and buddy try to figure out who the fake sartana is (presumably the one with the stolen loot and probably the one who hired slim shotgun to kill cochran). They surmise that it couldn’t have been homer, (I didn’t make out the explanation, something about “he would’ve laid low”?), and they say it couldn’t have been the judge since the judge was in sartana’s room looking for the money.

Buddy than interrogates one of the employees at Baxter red’s gambling house. (I couldn’t make out all that was said but…) The employee says that the previous owner sold his business to baxter red a few weeks ago for 150 thousand. Buddy ben says that Baxter red must be a rich guy to be able to afford that much, probably implying that Baxter red has the stolen loot, which is 300 thousand.

Buddy and sartana than interrogate the phony poker falls sheriff, who spills the beans that he was the one who killed Slim shotgun, and Baxter red hired him to do it. So this means it was Baxter red who lied to slim’s brother about the murder of his brother.

• I still don’t get why slim was killed.

Sartana goes to the gambling house and Baxter is waiting for him with some goons. The phony sheriff chooses to stay out of it. Sartana picks off the goons one by one with the help of buddy. They capture Baxter and force him to scream. The sound of the scream followed by the gunshot is used to attract the phony sheriff (though I still don’t know why). Sartana meets up with bounty hunter degueyo and he wins the duel.

The phony sheriff is spying on them through the eyes of the painting (sartana already knows about the painting). Sartana shoots the painting and the phony sheriff drops out. Before he dies the phony sheriff says that he was the fake sartana.

Baxter red comes in (sartana didn’t really kill him, they just wanted to bait the phony sheriff). Baxter reveals that the real owner of the gambling house was the now dead phon sheriff and that Baxter was just the figurehead, and therefore the wheareabouts of the stolen loot was knowledge that the phony sheriff took to his grave.

Baxter than blames bill cochran and bad luck for messing things up. (But I couldn’t catch exactly what he said).

Buddy ben than shoots sartana, saying that he has to be content with sartana’s bounty, since they don’t know where the stolen loot is. Buddy ben takes sartana’s body to the bank owner to collect the bounty. But of course sartana is not really dead. He just fakes his death so its in the papers and no more bounty hunters would be after him.

The bank owner was behind the whole thing along with someone named Jenkins?
*Whos Jenkins?

They make the bank owner give up the stolen loot which is in his cabinet along with the bounty for a total of 310 thousand. And they make him write a confession, saying that he spent the money and that sartana is innocent.

*I’m still not sure how they found out that it was the banker all along, since didn’t the secret of the loot’s whereabouts die with the phony sheriff?

Buddy ben and sartana end up keeping the money.

* we still don’t know who exactly shot the robbers in the hideout!!

These are the people involved in the bank robbery and their respective roles in the plot.

Bank manager- he is behind the robbery, which is an inside job. He collaborates with a bunch of people, and gets some bank guards to help him kill the other innocent bank guards. He takes a hit to the head to make it realistic, and hides the stolen loot in his cabinet. At the end he gives sartana and buddy ben the money and write a confession.

Bill cochran – main member of the bank robbers, collaborates with the fake sartana pretending that he is dead. Gets double crossed shot and put in jail. Gets shot by Slim shotgun before he can reveal more to sartana.

Slim shotgun- Hired to kill bill cochran to cover up the tracks. He himself is killed by the phony sheriff. They tell slim’s brother that the real sartana killed slim so slim’s brother goes out for revenge. I still don’t understand why slim needed to be killed.

Phony Sheriff- he is the fake sartana. He supposedly double crosses all the robbers and shoots everyone in the hideout. He probably took the loot to the bank manager. He also killed slim shotgun. He is also revealed to be the owner of the gambling house, using his share of the loot to pay for it. He probably got a loan from the bank manager because the bank manager has all the loot. He alone knows that the loot is actually with the bank manager. He also hires Baxter red to pretend to be the owner of the gambling house. I don’t know why he bothered spying on sartana in the painting and why he hired someone else to pretend to be the owner of the gambling house.

Homer crown- Also presumeably involved with the robbery as he made the derringer cylinder and sold it to phony sheriff to help frame sartana. He also hires some gunmen to get rid of sartana, I guess to cover up the tracks. He gets beaten up by a group of people I’m not sure who.

Baxter Red- Hired by the phony sheriff to pretend to be the owner of the gambling house. Probably a hired gun and track cover upper for the bank manager and the phony sheriff.

Judge- Owner of the amusement park. Former employer of bill cochran. I don’t think he is involved with the robbery but since he thinks sartana is behind the robbery he sneaks into sartana’s hotel room looking for the stolen loot.

Whoa nelly! :o Col. are you going SD on us? That must have taken a while. All work & no play makes Douglas Mortimer a dull boy ;). I guess you can say these movies have a few plotholes.
*This doesn’t seem to make sense as Sartana was never let go, he’s with the Sheriff.

• hmm I don’t remember anyone trying to kill sartana on his way to poker falls.

*But doesn’t he already have the stolen loot?

• I still don’t get why slim was killed.

[b]*Whos Jenkins?

* we still don’t know who exactly shot the robbers in the hideout!!
1 - The sherriff did not tell antone he was taking Sartana, for protection reasons. They assumed Sartana escaped.

2 - There was a gunman in Homers store, they were supposed to kill Sartana if he showed up.

3 - He has the money, but if Sartana is dead he will not be suspected.

4 - Slim was killed for two reasons. He knew what really happened, and to send his brother for vengeance on Sartana.

5 - Though he’s never adressed as anything but sherriff in the english dub, i believe it is the sherriff/ fake Sartana’s name.

6 - It was the sherriff/ fake Sartana and i believe Slim Shotgun with the rifle. Though it’s impossible to say for sure.

Also, Bill Cochran was the fake dead outlaw who was carried in for the robbery, and he was subsequently shot at the hideout, but survived and was captured. As Sartana found out in the poker game.

Actually, i don’t think this one really does. It’s a good who-dunnit that takes a coupl’a viewings to catch it all.

Reading your posts I’m getting confused too ??? Have to watch it again.

Thanks for clearing it up with me Spaghetti Monkey. I understand it all now.

Hopefully we got it right :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey great job with this thread. I just rewatched Angel of Death and I was able to confirm a few assumptions on here.

I just felt confused and bored… and was pleasantly surprised we had a discussion topic about this

When I saw this topic, it made me think of something after my first viewing of the Sartana films. When Gianfranco Parolini originally had the rights and control of the character, I do earnestly think he was thinking in terms of a series of adventures that would reference each other at one point or another. After Parolini and the producers had their falling out and Parolini walked away, giving up the character, the producers, Carnimeo and the various writers took the character in the direction they felt best. Parolini had wanted Sartana to be like a Phantom or Ghostly Specter, and while that would’ve been cool to see progress, I don’t know how long it could’ve lasted before the awe of it wore off. The James Bond mysteriousness fit the Western atmosphere much better as it came up with new concepts everytime, whereas I don’t think it was possible with the Phantasm aspect.

Also, when George Hilton briefly assumed the role, it was only because Garko found the script too tongue and cheek silly, hence the character’s slight change out of respect for Garko, and to let Hilton be able to do his own thing without worrying about filling someone else’s shoes.

Plus, the SW’s weren’t known for keeping linear, save doe certain characters retaining their personalities. So in a way, all we have to know to keep things straight is the Sartana character himself.

I just kind of watch them too without trying to grasp the intricacies of the plots. From what I understand, they mostly have to do with gold or money with people constantly betraying each other and Sartana always ends up the winner.
