Thanks for these excellent links. Just as Stanton wrote previously, the current Italian Blu-ray is different to the original Italian theatrical release.
Perhaps we fans should crowdfund a digitisation of the 35mm print of the Italian version?
Is Arrow doing a proper restoration adding new stuff or just porting the Kino discs plus adding the Italian version without the grotto scene.
Is the longer beating scene still going to be an extra?
Who is working in this?
Lots of questions haha. Assumption: as a licensee but not owner they have access to what others alao have had access to. But maybe they took two extra efforts: go back to the untampered material and do their own color grading; and try and fix all āissuesā with cuts and modifications.Weāll surely learn more as the release nears
Not really sure where you are getting this Arrow copying stuff from. Most of their recent 4K releases have been major improvements over existing releases, even compared to other 4K releases. For example, their recent 4K of The Great Escape absolutely blows Kinos out of the water, with not only a better encode but DV and HDR tastefully applied whereas the Kino was standard SDR. Lots of people working on the new Dollars sets have stated the amount of work going into these is immense and itās been a big group effort to fix all the issues with past releases, so thereās a good chance these finally may be as close to a ādefinitive releaseā as we may ever get. I mean look at Paramount with the recent 4K of OUATIW, itās clear no major studio is going to put this much effort into getting these films right! Obviously we canāt say anything til we get them in our hands but we have a very good chance at something awesome here.
Very interesting to follow the discussion here, but the most important thing is that the releases have to be worthwhile for Arrow. No sales no future issues. And it should be in our interest to continue to produce high quality SW editions in the future. I usually prefer German language releases, but I can live with English audio. Thatās why Iāve already ordered and anyone who doesnāt have 4K equipment can order the Blue-ray edition. And remember, everything is limited and prices usually go up after Arrow sells out. Therefore: Order!
What is difference between 4K and Blu Ray in terms of quality. Iām getting pretty good quality out of Blu RY on my 55ā TV at the moment. Iād probably have to upscale TV as well.
The resolution for Blue-ray (full hd) is 1920 x 1080 pixels, for 4 K 3840 x 2160 pixels. The picture is more detailed and more color intensive. However, all components must be 4K compatible, even the HDMI cable. Since I renewed my system 3 years ago, I immediately paid attention to 4K, my projector is even 8K capable. If Iām happy with my current equipment, I wouldnāt upgrade. Because the difference between Blue-ray and 4K (in my opinion) is not very big, but it is noticeable.
A bit off topic and years late this debate. But not to forget, UHD offers HDR, high dynamic range, that means a whole lot more color range and depth than any other format
Youāre right Sebastian. HDR, if available, tops the whole thing off. And itās HDR that makes the difference between the new 4K version of The Great Silence and Blue-ray, for example. The many bright snow scenes and the dark final sequence shine with a richness of detail never seen before. But, of course, all the equipment has to be HDR compatible again.
Iāve just ordered TGTBTU from Rarewaves. This movie is where it all started for meāand where it ends. Iām waiting for the rest of the trilogy to appear on Amazon, though I donāt feel the same excitement. Iām also considering The Great Silence in 4K.
You guys think Arrow will be releasing all three of the dollars movies in a hardbox like is shown for a fistful? I canāt imagine not and am guessing the only reason why A fistful is showing a hardbox is because it is the first to be released of the three. Just thinking it wouldnāt be weird for collectors to have a nice hardbox for the first and not the other two.
Iāv just realised that the artwork for the new āDollarsā BD releases, has been carried out by Tony Stella, the same talented guy who did the front cover for the recent Sergio Leone bookā¦
I think thatās a nice touch. Personally, I love his style, and Iām looking forward to having the three āDollarsā posters framed and hanging on my wall.
They will all be hardboxes. We only have picutre of Fistful so far because thatās the only one they have revealed the full specs of. Next month we will get FAFDM, and month after that we will get full details of GBU.
