Apocalypse Joe / Un uomo chiamato Apocalisse Joe (Leopoldo Savona, 1970)

Hey, I saw the old X Rated dvd and was considering picking it up, but noticed in the SWDB listing mentioning “When accessing the English language track there will be a forced “subtitle” saying “Only for sale in Germany, Austria and Switzerland”.” is this for the whole film or only in the beginning?

The whole film, I think. Get the Italian DVD if that is an issue for you.

Had this for ages but I’ve only just got around to watching it. Surprised to see so many negative comments since I thought it was pretty fantastic.

Joe has been updated to the new layout (3.0). Let us know if you can add anything: pictures, posters, trivia, facts, figures, links, etc

Love this flik personally, got it on one of those Spaghetti Western bible compilation dvds, alongside a half decent print of Blindman
Joe was letterbox and pretty decent quality, another great Steffen flik imo (he’s up there with Franco Nero as my favourite Spaghetti actor)

Just watched this one again and I think it might actually be my favourite film with Steffen.

I watched this one for the first time and found it to be a fantastic hidden gem among lesser know spaghetti westerns! the titular character who in addition to being a gunslinger is also a traveling Shakespearean actor is such a fun take!

Come for the bizarre concept but stay for the great music score by Bruno Nicolai, and final 30 minute long showdown in a deserted town between all of the main villain’s henchmen and the hero and his pals!

Anybody knows about the quality of the Italian dvd (IIF) ? It has a english dub, so I’m looking to order it.

I have the Italian DVD. Picture quality was good I’ll say, much better than the German Colesseo DVD of Dead men Don’t Count but not as good as Shango on the Koch DVD though. It has Italian and English dubs and Italian subtitles only. The title is in Italian but the rest of the opening credits are in English. I was pleased with it. Running time 90m33s Pal (plus 20s of silent DVD play time). .

The Nicholai score was great - he wrote a load of great scores in 1970, his vintage year - but I am sure I heard it before. Was it used in something else?

Little to add to this that others haven’t said. A lot of very bloodless shootings. I thought the killing of Rita was a little mean spirited and they seem to have got cold feet about it altogether (or were worried about the unrestricted rating) and just cut away before anything happened.

The killing of rita irritates a little bit. Was it a producers cut or finally a cut by the censorship ? I guess the producers had their hands in. The director did probably a more explicit scene. Or at least a cut for the Homevideo release only ? The DVD says “Film per tutti”. Maybe this includes young children as a possible part of the audience. Or is it a missinterpretation of myself ? It would explain a censored cut on dvd.

It’s not an Italian censor cut as it was passed unrestricted without cuts.

Most likely a producer’s cut I think. Though it could be a cut TV print. The death of Berg looks cut also; it’s entirely off-screen and done on Steffen’s facial reaction and a bit of soundtrack noise. Steffen’s traditional beating-up scene in the barn is relatively chaste as well.

The shoot-out deaths are particularly bloodless I thought; you can kill as many as you like for the unrestricted rating as long as no blood. Like the 12A Marvel movies now.

The Shanghai Joe theme is very similar, maybe it’s this you’re thinking of?

The Shanghai Joe score is from Have a Good Funeral, Sartana Will Pay. That’s quite similar to this score but I thought I’d heard this one before in annother movie also.

Ah, yes you’re right about this, I’ve noticed it too, didn’t think of it just now.

Then he used the same theme three times, it’s a good theme though, doesn’t matter.

Or maybe four times?

The theme is really a great one. But I guess, this peace of music was made for this flick. Possibly reused later, like the Sartana /Shanghai Joe theme. There’s is a Bruno Nicolai record titled “The original music of Apocalypse Joe and Tresette”

Hmm, but aren’t the SWs generally not bloody?

They were very violent for it’s time, but they barely used squibs, even in the 70s when after The Wild Bunch spurting blood became fashionable only few Spags used squibs. Blood close ups of destroyed hands or faces, yes, but the shoot outs remained bloodless.

Leone used squibs only in one scene in OuTW (without much blood) and in one flashback scene in DYS.
