And God Said to Cain / E Dio disse a Caino … (Antonio Margheriti, 1970)

It isn’t very good. Another average Steffen western with some above average sequences.

I disagree. Its alot better than the typical steffen potboilers.

Just watched this, and read all the reviews. Excellent work folks, and it captures the mood of this movie. I now need to watch A Stranger in Paso Bravo for sure.

Great gritty revenge movie. 4/5 stars.

I don’t think these two has that much similarities though the same names are used in both films. Paso Bravo is quite standard Steffen western.

Thanks to Franco Cleef i finally got to see this widescreen. It was already #6 in my top 20 so it isn’t moving up any, but it sure is nice to upgrade from the craptastic Direct Source VHS rip.

Full on Kinski as he plays a man hellbent on revenge. Amidst the backdrop of a tornado coming to town, Klaus lets Acombar know that he is coming for him via Acombars son. Then he lets him sweat it out as he skulks silently through town taking out his henchmen, while the wind howls in the background. It builds to a great finale with some fun revelations.

This has got to be Margheriti’s masterpiece in my book. That damn storm is practically another character in the movie. And i always love it when they use caves, great atmosphere. And Kinski sure is handy with that rifle. Great fun.

Fun Factor - 8.5/10 (the widescreen did get it an extra half point)

What do you mean by “fun revelations”?

Nothing earth-shattering, i just like the way we have to wait til the end to find out exactly why Klaus is seeking revenge (not terribly original, i know, but fun none the less). I also like the fact that Margheriti teases us a bit by having Klaus explain things to Dick while not allowing us to hear. And i like the way Dick reacts to the truth, followed by Maria’s manic pleading a bit later. It just all comes together very nicely in my opinion. I also like the secret room in the mansion. I’m a big fan of the ‘old dark house’ genre, so it was a plus to see this in a SW.

Well i feel like a Gringo after being beat up by a hord of Mexican Bandidos :o

Wen’t home and watched another, this one was in my next to see pile for ages.
Oh what a drama, this is what I call a bad case of precose shooting, but having Kinski on your back can have that effect.
I think it’s the first Margheriti SW I’ve seen maybe I’ve seen Joko (can’t remember) but it’s a very good SW, normal story, but well told, kinda like Django the bastard. The scenes being most of it filmed indoors and at night, you really just need a good set, even if used too many times, but the director did create a nice environment, with the storm and everything.
Peter Carsten (very diferent from that Down by the sun part) looks like Burt Lancaster in Il Gattopardo, Kinski looks like Kinski and that Marcella Michelangelli was really hot, pitty she does not shown more skin, and no rape scene with Kinski, but in revenge mode you can’t get caught with your pants down (have to see if she’s made some more diferent stuff from SW) the main theme was very cool in that gospel rhythm.
Margheriti (similar to Daisy in Portuguese Margarida) sometimes tried to create a Giallo feeling and I guess he did it.
I really enjoy it does not give you that waste of time sensation you have when you see a piece of crap.

Finally watched this after reading about it for years. I thought it was good but not great.

Honestly, I found it to be a less spooky, watered down Django the Bastard.

New poll on this one, too.

hold up, there are two topics here on this movie. I think we should merge them… (edit: done)

Ok, nice one. Thanks. I thought something might be wrong here.

Among twenty-six high quality b/w stills for this film I found this rare behind-the-scenes image …

Watched this not too long ago at about 2am.
I liked it quite a bit and thought it was pretty unique for a spaghetti western.

Feels almost like a gothic horror Rambo set in the old west. Really enjoyed the claustrophobic feeling of it taking place mostly in one town and within about a 24hr time span. Hamilton drifts into town at sundown to get his revenge, and by sunup leaves a ghost town behind him.

Highlights for me were the church bell crushing that guy in half, Hamilton seeming like an apparition to his victims by using the catacombs under the town to navigate unnoticed and pick people off, and the main bad guy killing his own wife and son and then spending the rest of the movie yelling Haaammiillttoonnnn!

Cons are… it’s a little too slow to build up, and a couple more creative deaths would have put it over the top. Kinki’s dub is pretty goofy but he doesn’t talk a whole lot while he’s mowing all these poor bastards down anyways. The final showdown is pretty anticlimactic with the funhouse mirror gag, something more creative or at least more brutal would have sealed it off better and made all the tension build up feel more impactful.

Solid fun nonetheless and in my opinion the 2nd best movie in the vengeance trails set behind Bandidos.

I’ll give it 7/10.

I just watched this one again.
If someone could update the main page: E Dio disse a Caino

At least some of the “filming location” was set at Elios Film Studios

Thanks,
