Going to watch this as just saw And God Said to Cain.
You Tube has both Italian and Spanish versions (latter about 8-9m shorter). The Spanish version is missing pre-credits scene on the stagecoach so must be the one Alex Cox saw. It has no pre-credits scene but also has a different opening credits scene; the Italian version has the credits over footage of the stagecoach but I think the Spanish version must have the credits over footage from later in the movie (although guessing without seeing it).
The pre-credits Italian scene on the stage is a parody of the Col Mortimer intro scene in FAFDM. Steffen asks if the stage stops at Paso Bravo only for a peddler (who looks like the peddler guy in FAFDM) to tell him it doesn’t and give him a convoluted explanation of how to get to Paso Bravo. Unfortunately Steffen doesn’t say ‘this stage WILL stop at Paso Bravo’. When he is next scene he has left (off screen) and is on foot.

Quite a strange film I thought. The oddest major character is Rosie’s black-clad bodyguard, Danny, a character eliminated by Marghereti from And God Said to Cain. Danny keeps being baited by the bad guys who imply he is gay. Jose, Acombar’s son, who is quite a pretty bloke who appears to have a harem of women back at the family hacienda, covers Danny’s face with red lipstick in one scene which must mean something. In revenge, Danny helps hero Gary kidnap Jose so Gary can do a prisoner swap for his sister in law, Annie, who resembles Gary’s dead wife (Annie is another character missing from And God Said to Cain). When Gary is away negotiating the swap, Danny is left alone with Jose who is tied to a wooden log in a crucifixion pose and bare chested. Jose starts baiting Danny again and Danny beats him up - this bit has been heavily cut by the Italian censors - and then is seen taking out a whip to deal out further punishment which i think we are meant to assume is a big turn on for Danny. Jose is murdered, off screen and Danny is found on the ground in a drunken stupor. Oddly, Danny never awakens, Gary finds him and leaves and then directs Acombar to where Danny is (still unconscious) in the knowledge that Acombar will probably kill Danny which he does without Danny stirring from the ground.
Steffen beds the saloon girl Rosie in this (which Kinski doesn’t do in the remake) and is also attracted to Annie as well because she looks like his dead wife. But he rides out with neither at the end because his wife is buried in the cemetery so he is caught between 3 women.
It is quite a bit different than And God Said to Cain although the latter, which is the better directed film, clearly plagiarises from it in a number of places - not only the names, but the peddler character, the use of only a rifle by the hero, a room with mirrors which gets shot, and the villain’s death by fire at the end.
