The Hitcher (1986) has been viewed.
Rutger Hauer is great to watch in this and ranks in one of his best roles, which makes me wonder as he done a role as good as this since I wonder…
He had a bit of a strange career
Initially, in Holland, he was more or less a teenage idol, my sister had a crush on him for years
He started, as a very young, very good-looking man, in a TV series, Floris, directed by (you guessed it) Paul verhoeven
In Turkish Delight, a nearly pornographic erotic movie (directed by Paul Verhoeven), he played the alter ego of Dutch author/sculptor Jan Wolkers, in Soldier of Orange (directed by …) a Dutch Resistence icon
But then he played the villain in a Stallone movie (forgot the title, it was a good one), and was since then often cast in rather creepy roles
The Osterman Weekend could have been a turning point, but alas it wasn’t a good film
Watched Io ho Paura by Damiano Damini and with Gian Maria Volonte. Good political conspiracy thriller. Not that much action here but the script is quite good as well as the acting.
Watched The Cave, which i taped the other night. I’d already seen the similarly themed Descent, which i found to be a bit of an ordeal…grim without being scary, and nasty just for nasty’s sake, as too many horror films these days seem to be. Also the all female cast annoyed me and the characters were basically unlikeable harridans. So, unusually for me, in this case Hollywood wons against the low budget effort. In this one, the caves were water filled and there was some folklore involved…also the monsters were due to a parasite entering into a symbiotic relationship with the hosts, rather than years of isolated adaption, in the Descent, so the once human monsters seemed less concerned with killing the victims than with making more of themselves. The characters were the standard generic types and there were no real surprises…except for the fact that the first one infected, did genuinely want to help the others find a way out before he changed, despite his creepy behaviour. Also featured the requisite twist ending. But overall it was a fun, popcorn movie, and to be honest that’s how i prefer my horrors.
Also watched In Hell earlier. Haven’t seen any of Van Damme’s recent straight to dvd movies, apart from Replicant which i found to be fun really. Despite hearing about how awful his recent stuff is, i didn’t find this one too bad to be honest. A bit grim overall but it held my attention. Still, i’m not likely to rush out and buy the rest of his recent catalogue!
Currently watching Most haunted on tv. Several of my friends are mad about this programme and i’ve never seen it before. If it is actually a bit of a piss-take (and i’m assuming it is) it’s actually quite cheesy fun…
cannot agree with you more on the Descent. Annoying characters whom I felt no sympthy for at all. The heroine is just a cold bitch by the end and her punishment for her friend was overboard. Not really scary at all. The monsters are introduced after an hour! What kind of horror film is this?! Bad movie. And I actually began to feel sorry for the monsters.
I think most haunted is fun and I like to try and believe in ghosts but not convinced. Fun anyway.

Not too bad, but still rather dissapointing account of the day Bobby Kennedy died
Too many familiar faces spoil the atmosphere
The actors do well, but if a film is about anonymous people who just happened to be on the spot where history was written, all those familiar names are simply distracting
And somehow I had expected a more compelling movie about this subject, that seems to have everything for a film that holds your attention from start to finish. This film certainly doesn’t, it’s often a bit boring and it only really picks up during the final half hour. Bobby Kennedy is not played by an actor, but smuggled into the movie by means of old newsreels etc. This material is more interesting than all things Estevez shot. I won’t be the first one who says that the words of Kennedy reminded me nearly constantly of Barack Obama.
The Rookie (1990/ Dir.: Clint Eastwood)
IMO a decent Action Thriller by and with Clint Eastwood. He is a Detective and chases together with a Rookie (Charlie Sheen) a violent Crime Couple. There are some good Action Scenes included and Clint has the best line in the Movie:There’s gotta be a hundred reasons why I don’t blow you away. Right now I can’t think of one. It looks like a Dirty Harry Movie and I wonder why it wasn’t.
Watched Cellat (Turkish Death Wish) & Ilsa, Tigress of Siberia
Cellat was really interesting. Not as over the top violent as I thought it would be. In a documentary that is an extra on this disc (called Turkish Vendetta) there are some really over the top scenes from other movies.
Remember the standard scene where the guy is strapped to the table as the saw blade gets closer and closer…?
Well, in this one nobody comes in at the last minute for a rescue…splatter…
Ilsa: in an age before plastic surgery that woman (Diane Thorne) was amazing. That said, I don’t go much for the Ilsa movies. In this one she plays the warden of a Soviet Gulag. Then, when Stalin is gone, she moves to Canada and opens a brothel!
Other than Ilsa herself, the arm wrestling scene over the chainsaws is the highlight.
Yes it’s a variation of Zatoichi. It’s a typical 80’ Action Comedy Flick . The violent story is set in the 80’s and not in Japan. So you have some Sword against Guns fights in it.
