Saw this special gem. Marlon Brando really made this movie entertaining, although what I read about the production he kinda destroyed the movie with his own improvisation of the story.
Before Iâd seen the film, Leonard Maltinâs Movie Guide rated it, âBombâ ⊠zero points, disaster etc ⊠So, as I keep coming back to it many times over the years, I have to say Leonard doesnât know his arse from his elbow regarding film, or he was just following the pack of pussy critics when he gave this such an arrogantly damming review.
I have always found it fascinating and highly entertaining ⊠Oh that we had films of this calibre around today, Iâd be quite pleased to watch anything Maltin described as a bomb
Look at Leonard ⊠what a dweeb! FFS
The Missouri Breaks is one of my favourite westerns. I can understand why some people donât like Brandoâs performance. He comes across as more menacing when he drops the Irish accent in the film. But I have a theory the character isnât supposed to be Irish at all, that itâs all part of Lee Claytonâs own madness and multiple personas. When you watch it from this point of view, youâre left wondering who he really is and that makes him even more frightening IMO.
Just watched Catlow.
I vaguely remember watching it about 40 years ago as a teenager and remembering Catlow as a likeable rogue.
Enjoyable euro/SW and the best ânewâ SW that I have watched in a while.
Once Upon a Time in the West
It was my 2nd time seeing it and Iâm completely speechless. Such a beautiful film.
Iâm kinda ashamed of my 16-year-old self because she didnât appreciate this film that much It was my 1st time seeing it then
Films never change, but our age does; and, as a result, so do our attitudes (for better or worse) and perception of them.
I am so glad that you thoroughly enjoyed âOUATITWâ the second time aroundâŠalthough I canât imagine you being âspeechlessââŠ
Similar experience here, OUATITW was the first western I ever saw⊠I was like 14, I saw it because I heard it influenced RDR. I had tried really hard to like the film, but outside of the shoutouts it didnât hold my attention and I thought it was boring. I was too young to appreciate and enjoy such a film. It was also not the best film to start with, dollars trilogy is much more accessible.
A double-bill of gun-blazing action last night, from 1964 and 1969 respectivelyâŠ
âWho are those guysâŠ?â
Finnish-American western The Outlaws / 5 Outlaws (2023/2024). Was an interesting watch but nothing that special, in my opinion. The mixing of flashbacks and current moment, the repeated scenes and the narration was a bit distracting and annoying.
I think my favorite part of the film was the ending I also liked the song the war veteran was singing under the tree while playing the guitar
I watched Ambush (1950) last night starring Robert Taylor. I found this film to be a little bit different from the other cavalry westerns. Itâs a pity that they didnât try experimenting a bit more. When the film opens, Taylor has a beard, which was unusual for the leading men of the period. Unfortunately he gets a cut while staying at fort. The film gets a bit too domestic during the middle section but thereâs some good performances and action towards the end. Recommended!
Very good western, and a pretty unknown one, and one which really surprised me as it was so much better than expected.
A western (one of many actually) for all those who think westerns before FoD featured always a white cladded hero rescuing a women from the black cladded baddie or some savages.
Cheated on Spagvemberfest last night and went for an overdue rewatch of Pale Rider.
Enjoying a rewatch of one of my favourite Corbucci fliksâŠ
A Professional Gun, always surprised how great Palance is in this classic movie

Which of these did you watch during spagvemberfest (for my stats)? And yes, gr at to have you back, amigo
Iâm glad to see you as well.
Iâve checked: Take a hard ride, sledge, cordoba, adios gringo and zorro
Watched âRiders of Destinyâ (1933) AKA that one b-western in which John Wayne sorta plays a singing cowboy who (dubbed while singing) sings a mournful dirge to intimidate his enemies!
Yes its as odd as it sounds but at under an hour in runtime I think this is one of the better b-western films for the strange concept alone and is probably a good middle point in Wayneâs career between âthe big trailâ (1930) and âstagecoachâ (1939)!
Will also probably be of interest to fans of the coen brothers film âThe Ballad of Buster Scruggsâ (2018)!
