The Last Western You Watched? ver.2.0

Oh damn, I have The Bravados blu-ray. Got to watch that! I myself watched Hill’s The Long Riders yesterday and it was good but wasn’t blown away, good shoot outs but even after two weeks I am still thinking more about my first watch of El Puro, more intriguing imo.

Waiting for my blu-ray to watch this one with anticipation!!!

I’ve been wanting to watch this one so when I found it in the bargain bin at the store for $3.00, I thought, “What do I have to lose?” Walter Hill…great cast…a western. Why not?

Oh, Walter…how disappointing.

I really wanted to see Dead for a Dollar when it was first announced, after all Hill plus a great cast but so many poor reviews from trusted people with similar tastes. Will still give it a go someday but in no rush to seek it out now.

The trailer basically killed all interest i had in the movie. Just about everything seemed bad in it.

I also dread the moment I will have to watch this. Huge Walter Hill fan here, but his later work is just disappointing…

Speaking of Walter Hill, (whom we all love for his great 1970s/80s stuff … ) has anyone else seen this travesty ??? This is not ‘bottom of the barrel’, this is somewhere well below that lofty status.

“unfortunately” not yet… I am mildly (or morbidly) curious though

I wrote this last year and of course there are some gaps in my Hillucation

Curiosity killed the cat! … you’ve probably seen worse or maybe on par with this, but it’s quite saddening to see a once respected director/producer get involved with such a disaster.

It’s not even in the so bad it’s good category

what did you make of Bullet in the Head or whatever it was called. I mean at least it had Sara Shahi ;))

Surprisingly it’s actually quite watchable, and I’m no fan of Stallone … but as I had low expectations, it turned out much better than I would have imagined.

For the Wild West Summer 2023 challenge on letterboxd I watched full moon studios’ “Oblivion 2: Backlash” (1996) for task number 6.A Cross Genre Western (Horror, Noir, Comedy, etc.)!

This is a bit of a step down from first film but still a good time if you enjoyed the previous entry from full moon studios!

Its got less stop-motion critters in it, (excluding the giant mountain turtle done via a Godzilla-esque man in a suit styled effects which is very fun!) the story makes less sense then the first one, but its more of that sweet sweet cheese-ball sci-fi western nonsense that I personally enjoy!

It still has a fun loaded cast of genre film/TV regulars having a good time so I can’t be too hard on something like this!

Been watching some American classic westerns recently, today I picked Johnny Guitar. Fantastic film! The style of this one certainly influenced many of the Italian directors, there’s some very memorable scenes and frames that stands out- when Emma Small shoots down the chandelier and the house catches fire, or when the Kid gets shot in the forehead.

True, what a picture

I crawled out of bed this morning to find Open Range just coming on. I had to sit down and watch it again.

I do believe that this one is a classic and doesn’t get the attention it deserves. A simple straight forward story (do you really need much more in a western?) and I am always blown away by the excellent job Costner did with the harsh realism of the gunplay.

Yesterday I saw Robert Aldrich´s classic Vera Cruz (1954). It was clearly a huge influence on Leone and a lot of other spaghettis. I very much enjoyed it, with wonderfully colorful characters, good cinematography and a solid plot. Highly reccomended!

Just now I rewatched Django il Bastardo with the commentary on the Synapse Blu ray. Highly reccomended to listen to the track if you have the blu.

I’m continuing with American westerns and this time it was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I really love this film.

I just watched that one on Monday as Grit TV was having a John Wayne Marathon for the Labor Day holiday. It really was great visiting that one again.

It’s a master study in storytelling and great characters! And I actually even felt for John Wayne’s character…

Lee Marvin is absolutely terrific as an outlaw as well.
