He looks like one of the village people!!
Doc (1971)
Excellent beginning and end, the middle not so great. While the performances were very good, shot well and it did not suffer from any of these too clean looking characters discussed above, the story just dragged on a bit too much for me & I just didnāt care about it. Overall, this one is more my cup of tea though.
I really loved the introduction scene in the desert sandstorm though. I love storms of any kind in movies, and like with Death Rides A Horse, this first scene in the middle of a storm instantly absorbed me into the film. Too bad it didnāt hold up to these first moments until the very end.
I remember owning this Warner Bros, VHS ⦠didnāt keep it alas, as I wasnāt that impressed by the movie initially ⦠but it definitely improves with repeated viewings.
PS: Leoneās El Paso film set rarely looked better than in this film.
Wow, I didnāt even realize the film was shot in Almeria⦠shame on me! I hadnāt even heard of it till mentioned in this thread. I guess that perhaps partly explains why I loved the look of it
I really love that VHS cover, better than the posters. But I couldnāt find a large sized image of the english VHS cover
Barely started The Tall T but Iām going to have to save it for some other time. My mood is too cynical lately to appreciate this and it feels like Iām watching an old Walt Disney film so far
Switched on Joe Kidd instead for some mindless bedtime viewing
āDocā is one of my favourite American-produced Spanish Westerns. I love the grimness, and the grime, that accompanies the legendary tale; while Almeriaās locations are always a pleasure to behold. Stacy Keach, as Doc, and Harris Yulin, as Wyatt Earp, give compelling performances.
The āAmazon UKā Bluray is worth picking up, and has a few interesting extras to accompany itā¦
The best thing to do when watching these old westerns is try and judge them by the standard of the time. Itās tricky especially when you donāt really buy it. I avoided certain older westerns due to this prejudice and am only recently giving them a try.
Joe Kidd is awesome, I canāt believe it has such a bad rep.
Joe Kidd is a good film, I agree, but it does contain some of Eastwoodās worst acting, especially towards the end. The film grew on me more with repeated viewings. Nice soundtrack, too
Eastwoodās acting? I canāt remember.
I agree with you on the soundtrack I did enjoy the music. A good score always raises a film a couple of notches. Lalo Schifrin is the sound of 70s cinema to me. His crowning achievement being his Enter the Dragon score!
Whatās so good about it?
Oh for me itās the cast, Eastwood, John Saxon, Robert Duvall and Don Stroud. I like the setting, the landscapes etc, the aforementioned music. I think the script by Elmore Leonard was probably never completely realised, it was inspired by a real life incident. Any political undercurrent was me.
Eastwood was not in perfect health during the film, suffering from symptoms that suggested a bronchial infection, in addition to having several panic attacks, and it probably impacted on his performance.
All in all it isnāt essential Eastwood viewing but itās an good looking, entertaining popcorn flick.
I would like Joe Kidd much more if it had stuck with Eastwoodās character in the opening scenes being the focus instead of the direction it takes. I like this Joe Kidd guy, heads over to the bar to get himself a beer during the town shoot out. The story that follow is less interesting than this character, but its still an alright watch every few years or so.
I agree, I loved the grimeyness to this film and I really liked the Doc character/how he was played. I just didnāt think the bulk of the story was worth its time spent, could have been much better.
Even has some very spaghetti looking shots
Well I put on my big boy pants and watched all of The Tall Tā¦
No sir, I didnāt like it. Aside from the scenery, there wasnāt much I liked here
Next up is Joshua 1976
Oh my god⦠this music in Joshua
Well done for at least giving it a try though.
I am a fan of Fred Williamson and the 70s cinema of Pam Grier and Richard Roundtree. Anyway I am would really like to know what you think because I have never got round to watching JOSHUA.
Joshua was really bad
Yep ⦠I gave up after the first 10 minutes ⦠Crap-tastic!
Hahaha oh man⦠the freaking music was killing me
I had to take a break and wash some dishes to clear my head
One of the absolute worst westerns Iāve ever seen, including the worst spags
Iāll give it a miss then!!
