That’s a good point, he was especially good in The Panic in Needle Park, definitely one of his best roles.
A couple of weeks in China interrupted my movie watching a little but am pushing through 1958 now and started with a bunch of British ones. A pretty good year for Hammer that’s for sure. And the very first Carry On film too.

Trying to watch more horror / Halloween themed films this October. Started strong in late September with three flicks in consecutive nights. I do have a feeling it’s all down hill from Psycho but I will continue.
Any recommendations please fire them over. I think The Omen is next.
Psycho (1960) - 5/5
First time watch. Helped massively that I knew nothing about Psycho before entering. Simply brilliant. Never a dull moment, amazing pacing, the definition of “suspense” should point to this flick. I just can’t think of many potent flaws. Great film. One I could watch over and over again actually.
Carrie (1976) - 2/5
Second time watch. Pretty sure I watched this when I was a youngster, couldn’t remember too much. Wasn’t a huge fan. Didn’t love the religious angle. Thought the entire film was a gentle (albeit intriguing) build up to a rather tepid and tame conclusion. Sissy’s performance was great. I liked the high-school theme / vibes. Easy to watch overall but not overly memorable for me.
The Shining (1980) - 3.5/5
First time watch. Again, helped massively that I knew nothing about The Shining before entering. Pretty good, didn’t love it but I did enjoy it. I was saying to my partner after an hour or so that Jack Nicholson’s character being possessed would have been more effective and shocking if he wasn’t such an awkward and unlikeable character in the first thirty or so minutes. He came across as a pretty poor husband and father. It was like the possession had started on the drive up to the hotel. I have been reading about the flick lately and it seems that the book is different so I may give that a read.
I did like it though, I felt like the entire final 20-30 minutes was brilliant, executed well and highly enjoyable. I feel like this built up to an epic climax (similarly to how Carrie was) and delivered, whereas Carrie I don’t think delivered as much.
How did you even manage that? This is such a famous and iconic film.
I knew of the shower scene. That’s pretty much it. Similar applies to The Shining. There were one or two scenes that I’d been familiar with but nothing overly deep.
Never really been huge on horror or Hitchcock.

Dial M for Murder (1954) - 4.5/5
Great film. The first half was so good. Loved the characters. The setting. The costumes. The dialogue. The everything. So many piercing blue eyes, I don’t know if it was my copy or editing.
Grace Kelly was amazing. Anthony Dawson was superb - what an incredible head of hair he had.
Felt like there was a slight lul just after the midway point but it did pick up a bit towards the end.

Jurassic World 2015 7/10.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 2018 5/10.
Jurassic World: Dominion 2022 5/10.
Glamorous popcorn cinema with bombastic sound – the perfect distraction to take your mind off things – essentially tells the same story each time, with different supporting characters surrounding the two heroes, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.
Remo Williams: The adventure begins 8/10
This was the first film in a planned series of, initially, three further films featuring special agent Remo Williams (Fred Ward)– a sort of American James Bond – with whom director Guy Hamilton had already demonstrated his talent. I saw this film at the cinema back then and then again on video; this is a reunion after 40 years. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a commercial success, so there was never a sequel. What I remember most of all is Tommy Shaw with the theme song ‘What If’ – a brilliant 80s rock song.
