Gave “The Way of the Gun” (Christopher McQuarrie, 2000) another watch after seeing it years ago, and I really feel like this is a movie a lot of members here might enjoy.

Kind of got lost in the late 90s/early 2000s wave of Tarantino wannabes, but it’s really more of a Peckinpah homage than anything else. Some of the best shootouts ever put on film if you ask me, with lavish attention to detail in terms of proper gun usage. I’m not a gun enthusiast by any means but the attention to detail here makes for some incredible action scenes.

Really interesting cast too, with a solid late career James Caan performance and some shockingly good turns by guys who never impressed me otherwise (Ryan Phillippe, Taye Diggs). Definitely recommended!

Good thing I didn’t offer to eat my hat again if I liked this one, because it’s really good.

Both lead actors very much playing against type, with Robert Taylor as an oafish killer, and Stewart Granger as the thoughtful sympathetic character with a conscience who team up reluctantly on a hunt that’s a showdown waiting to happen … Excellent direction and strong performances all round.

On this occasion I don’t mind being wrong … and I’d recommend it to any members who may have a hang up about 1950s movies, being too cheesy or formulaic - Sure, there is a faint whiff of cheese, but overall the movie is highly entertaining.

Any John Woo fans here? I’d only ever seen his Hollywood movies, but I watched Hard Boiled (1992) for the first time last night and it was awesome, can’t believe it took me this long to watch it. Completely over the top of course but immensely entertaining. Now that most of his catalog is finally available on streaming I’m definitely planning on checking out more.

You can’t really go wrong with Woo. Your next stop should be the A Better Tomorrow trilogy and The Killer. If you can, try and find a way to watch them with the original stereo tracks, the modern 5.1 mixes replace the gunshots with more pathetic sounding ones and it really ruins the gunfights.

Good to know regarding the sound mixing, thanks! I’m guessing most streaming services use the 5.1 mix so sounds like it might be worth getting my hands on physical copies of those ones.
