Billy Wilder at his absolute best and Gloria Swanson was just so over the top insane which worked perfectly in this film.
I donāt remember ever seeing any bad Billy Wilder films ⦠if only this standard of story telling was the normā rather than the exception.
āSunset Boulevardā, also impressed and entertained the hell out of me first time - and Iād suggest you check out some of his others.
Iāve got his films The Apartment and Some Like it Hot on my list too, gonna watch Apartment tommorow
Some Like It Hot is a great film
I went and had a peek at your list. There is some great stuff there. Out of curiosity, have you watched Wilderās Witness for the Prosecution and/or Stalag 17?
Yesterday night I saw āAlphavilleā by Jean-Luc Godard. A great sci-fi/noir film
I have not! The only other Wilderās I have seen are Sabrina and Double Indemnity.
My goal is to get through the current list first, and if I still have plenty of Summer Iām gonna add some more - those two included!
I have a similar list on LB, i call it the āI cant believe i havenāt seen thisā list
Some great films on your list. Having recently rewatched All About Eve side-by-side with Sunset Boulevard I thought Mankiewiczās was the better film by far. It still zings with life and takes the breath away, thanks to brilliant dialogue and fine acting.
That said, Wilderās standard was always above average, Witness For The Prosecution and Double Indemnity being standouts.
Followed it up with Wilderās The Apartment today. Iām not usually the person who gets overly attached to people in films, but Iāve never wanted to scream at my TV as much as I did during that short fake-out before the ending
Glad you enjoyed it!
Tonight I saw The Great Train Robbery (1903) and Commandos, and earlier this week, Psycho. I was very impressed by TGTR, loved Psycho and thought that Commandos was decent at best. It had some interesting things such as humanizing soldiers, well-made war scenes, Van Cleef and a very good ending, but lack of character development esentially made me not care about/be interested in any of the characters.
I have decided to make an admission to everyone. What I am about to write will undoubtedly bring about mockery and ridicule from many but I have prepared myself so, bring it on. I can take it. Here it goes:
My wife and I enjoy watching bad Nicolas Cage movies.
The worse the better and the more over the top his performance the better. We have had some wonderful times on a Friday or Saturday night laughing at and not with these horrible pieces of so-called ācinemaā.
Last night, my wife happily informed me that Cageās latest offering, Renfield, had just been added to our Peacock app. In this film, Cage plays the original Count Dracula himself while Nicholas Hoult portrays the title character who is, of course, the vampires #1 henchman.
And, wouldnāt you know it, this one really surprised us. Donāt get me wrong, if you are looking for a thought provoking piece of cinema you will be incredibly disappointed. But, if you are in the mood for a good old fashioned blood soaked violent gore fest chock full of goofy, but often spot on, humor where Cageās over the top style works perfectly, you just might have a good time watching this 93 minutes of mindless escapism.
I donāt think there is anything wrong with that. I watched Renfield in a cinema, and I really enjoyed it. Oh, I like that movie about Nicolas Cage beating up mascots. Thatās some crazy fun.
I agree - Willys Wonderland is a silly little blast
Not so worried about your āCageā addiction ⦠but the other Nicholas is another matter - How in the name of fuck does this zero charisma bland goof get cast in anything ⦠heās pure awful!
Donāt know why that should be cause of mockery I also enjoy the odd Cage movie and can see that I have downed 65 movies of his so far. Heās really not a bad actor just has had a terrible track record choosing awful movies. Also do try some of his really good ones. Being a Lynch-fan Wild at Heart is easy to recommend.
I also reccomend Lord of War, he gives a fantastic preformance in it.
Cocaine Bear. Aside from bland character development, itās a fun watch and I didnāt realize it was Ray Liottaās last film.
Oh, I have been watching his films since Valley Girl so I have been there for the goodā¦the badā¦and the downright ugly. I can remember all my friends and I in college going to see Raising Arizona in the theater and, after college, all of us getting together to go see Wild at Heart as we were all such massive David Lynch fans. But, from about the time of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance on until just recently, there were some absolutely abysmal films. The next 30 or so after the last Ghost Rider is what I am referring to as being the ābad Nicolas Cage moviesā that we enjoy watching.
