The Great Silence / Il grande silenzio (Sergio Corbucci, 1968)

Interesting. Thanks for the link captain. I appreciate the screens to support his identifications and speculations (the ones with question marks).

(Casey) #468

Is there any word on a possible blu-ray release of this? I know it was restored this year and I heard some chatter it was getting a new release on video.

(Sebastian) #469

yes scrolling up helps  and already listed in the SWDb

(Sebastian) #470

This could be interesting

(Gritz) #471

This is fantastic news!!!

(Mark) #472

That’s exciting to hear. I’m a longtime subscriber to FM. A few DVD releases may not have been of the highest picture quality but overall I’ve been quite satisfied. Their blu-rays look great IMO. Looking forward to it.

Very heavy snowfall here right now. The only reason I leave the house is to listen to this soundtrack on my iPod while walking through the snow.

#474

Thanks to the recent US theatrical run, this film finally has a score on Rotten Tomatoes (100% so far). They also finally changed the fucking poster, as they were using the Into Great Silence (2005) one for years.

(Sebastian) #475

My review (English) should be finished and published tonight or sometime tomorrow in time for the Bluray release date

(Sebastian) #476

Here it is, the English text of my review of The Great Silence and the US BluRay:

Already shipping, so get it!

#477

Mine’s just shipped :slightly_smiling_face:

Also, I’m glad the video of Alex Cox is new and not just the old one from the DVD releases.

A cornerstone in my collection , I absolutely love this movie , Carbucci’s masterpiece in my humble opinion . Happy ending aside

(Nick) #479

Just bought it! Looking forward to watching after reading the nice review! Thanks man!

#480

I’ve watched mine twice already, once In Italian and once in English.

(Nick) #481

I’m looking forward to seeing it in Italian. I’ve only ever watched the English dub that was on the Fantoma release so it’ll be interesting to see the little changes in character names and script.

Also here’s some screen caps from the blu ray.

Looks like that fucking cheese cloth is still in the movie:

Sebastian, I just wanted to make sure, Cinematheque is the French company that did the 4k restoration correct? And both Film Movement and Cinematheque are utilizing the same film negatives right?

(Sebastian) #482

Cinemateque is not a company it’s… The cinemateque…

To quote my own review:

Now the Film Movement disc is also not 4K material, but it is based on the Compass Film (Movietime) 2K restoration. It is entirely possible that the Cinematheque did a 4K scan but all subsequent restoration work for further use happened in 2K. The Cinematheque did the restoration based on the negatives provided by Movietime, so this is probably as close as it’ll get.

Not sure why the Cinemateque was talking about 4k in their press release…

(Nick) #483

I got ya now. I’d never heard of what the Cinemateque was. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

(Sebastian) #484

(Andy) #485

Holy **** does this film ever look good with the 2K restoration blu-ray!

#486

There is the definite technology potential that will make current restorations look like the before image. This would have to go well beyond the current sharpening(just one aspect of restoration which can create other issues), below, which, in this example, just “sharpens” the current restored version.
