Does anyone know the actual running time of this or versions thereon.
The Italian censor records only 83m (April 64) and the UK theatrical version was 79m per the BBFC in December 1964 . Amazon Prime have this in an 80m version.
SWDB site has 98m for the Australian DVD but I just looked at the back cover of DVD on an Ebay copy and is says 80m. The French DVD on EBay also has 80m on the back cover.
This site also has a 105m running time given. What is the source of that?
Thanks (I have not yet seen this).
Now watched this on You Tube which I assume is the same 80m print as on UK Amazon Prime (not free unfortunately).
Its very much a Hollywood imitation western - the English print has everyone with Anglicised credits - and resembles one of the AC Lyles B movies. I guess its the Spanish equivalent of an AC Lyles film with cheap budget and stock footage but without a cast full of aging alcoholics.
Most of the movie takes place inside a fort under siege from loads of Apaches. There is lots and lots of talk on the same subject and there are too many words used in the sentences which was often the case for poorly dubbed films. The Apaches get killed in their dozens by full-frontal charges on the fort. I dunno why they didn’t wait for night when they could have sneaked up and got in easily with far less casualties. I think a lot of the Apache shots were stock footage. Aldo Sambrell I didn’t spot at all - and maybe he is not in the film (he is in Massacre at Fort Grant which was made a year later by the same director and has a similar plot). Frank Brana sports a big bushy beard.
Please note Spanish release date was 1 October (1964-10-1 per BFI site) not 10 January.
BFI site claims Spanish version is 90m but unable to substantiate this. Italian/English version is 83m.
First time watch. Decent film. Easy on the eye and easy to follow. Heavy American style flick, as most have noted. Lots of dialogue, some of which was a little blunt and uneasy. Not a monstrous amount of action, pretty slow start with things picking up towards the end. It lacked that Italian flair and personality, in my opinion. Glad I watched it though, not overly familiar with pre 66’ SW’s or the non-Italian ones.
5/10. Didn’t think much to Frank Latimore, but did enjoy seeing George Martin have a decent role. The climax was too idealistic and predictable for me. Not impactful at all. 5 is probably generous here.
Really good quality version has been uploaded on YouTube recently for anyone wanting to catch this.
It is a pretty good film. I am curious whether the Spanish dub is completely different because the Indians in the English version are not Apaches but peaceful Yumas who are mistaken for Apaches.
