In conjunction with the 26th Leeds International Film Festival, Lee Broughton has programmed - and will introduce - a double bill of ‘Django’ films.

Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Western ‘Django Unchained’ takes its main inspiration from a popular sub-cycle of Italian Westerns from the 1960s and 1970s that featured a variety of gunmen called ‘Django’. Since worldwide interest in these particular ‘Spaghetti Westerns’ is currently running high, Lee has programmed a double bill of two classic ‘Django’ films as part of the 26th Leeds International Film Festival’s ‘Fanomenon’ strand.

‘Django’ (Sergio Corbucci, Italy/Spain, 1966) and ‘Django Kill!’ (‘Se sei vivo spara’, Giulio Questi, Italy/Spain, 1967) will screen at the Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds on Tuesday 6th November.

‘Django’ begins at 14:15

‘Django Kill!’ begins at 16:00

Looks like one you might be able to get to Rev. 8)

Well, I could’ve gone cos I’ve been around today, but unfortunately my glass back has twanged again. Last time was when the Col. came over and I couldn’t get to London, which was a far bigger bummer. >:(
But… I wasn’t so bothered about seeing these on the big screen unless there was a few chums and beers involved  but I would still probably be sitting in the fleapit, flicking popcorn at the students, at this very mo for Django Kill if I’d felt a bit more active.
Ne’er mind.

What is a contemporary Western? The Western is perhaps the quintessential film genre. Ever present throughout the history of cinema, its pervasive nature means that even those who don’t choose to watch Westerns regularly are fully familiar with the genre’s core iconography and key narrative concerns. While the production of Westerns went into decline during the 1970s, a succession of skilled directors (Sam Peckinpah, Don Siegel, the Coen Brothers, et al) have been able to successfully place recognizable elements of the genre within films that have a modern day setting. This short season showcases two classic examples of this trend.

For the German members around Kassel (and all the others who want to show up): Screening of “El Topo” on next Friday, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” on Saturday.
