Low-Budget Spaghetti Westerns

Isn’t the huge salaries of the Hollywood stars also a big part of movie budgets today?

Here’s my take.

Low budget spaghettis are either cheap exploitive trash that is fun, or the films that use their freedom from the studios to make something special.

But Hollywood did for a time take risks with low budgets. After the success of Easy Rider, the studios did a real cool thing. They tried some sort of program that allowed young filmakers to go out and make their own movies with a limited budget but complete artistic freedom Control over cuts, editing, etc were the choice f the filmakers. Peter Fonda made Hired Hand with this “program.” As did Monte Hellman with Two Lane Backdrop and Dennis Hopper with the Last Movie.

I despise the big budgeted Hollywood actioners of today. It’s all CGI, action, explosions, cars, women, and bombs. But no substance and the overblown and totally unrealistic plot is completely lost by the end. Or we just don’t care by then.

But on topic:
To possibly clarify some characteristics of the 2 cent Spaghetti… here is a list of common trademarks.

Sand Pit location
Cave film studios
Lots o’ shooting
Bad acting
Fist fights galore
Thick meaty punch sounds
Booming gunshots
Extravagent falls
Stuntman actors
Dean Stratford
Cliches
Bad dialogue
Poor production values

All of them? That's pretty strong stuff!

Well, not all of them but ones such as Transformers, Indiana Jones, Eagle Eye, Live Free or Die Hard etc. I hate the urban settings in those types films and films like them. Not ALL Hollywood. Just most of them.

Can you think of any SW - except Fidanis - that were shot there?

Have you ever had the misfortune of seeing Alien vs. Predator: Requiem? That movie is the absolute epitome of the type of movie you just described. Urban settings, special effects and CGI, zero plot, bad acting, explosions, zero substance. Really shitty stuff haha.

Agree that was a complete mess. ;D
Can you think of any SW - except Fidanis - that were shot there?
Yes actually. Once Upon a Time in the Wild Wild West.

Don’t know that one. Does it starr Gordon Mitchell?

It star Gordon Mitchell and is often called the worst spaghetti western ever released!

Sounds interesting!

I think, if I have one or two weekends time, I’ll build my own Cave Studios!

Nice recovery
Hey Korano, any chance you might reveal the whereabouts of your video store? I have relatives in Seattle. When I mentioned that there seemed to be a store in their area that stocked every film ever made… Well anyway, I said I’d ask.

I’ll be glad to tell all.

It is called Scarecrow Video

It is located in Roosevelt in the University District.

Right across the street from a big steeple.

They carry Region 1, Region 2, PAL, DVD-R, Laser disc, Blu Ray, Out of Print DVD’s or VHS tapes, they rent region free DVD players, they have categories that include Spaghetti Western, Polizi, cannibal films, a literal maze of folding bookshelfs full of films of certain directors such as Leone, Margheriti, Fulci, Peckinpah, and just about every other known filmaker including Bunuel and DeMille. It is 2 stories high. With a large selection of Used and New DVD’s for sale.

Just got back from there today and picked up Vendetta at Dawn, Contraband, Dick Lift in Sacremento, and Arizona Colt Returns.

Known guests include Quentin Tarantino, Alex Cox, and Monte Hellman who hosted a showing of his film Two Lane Backdrop there.

Sorry for the ramble.
I’ll just give you a link.
