Two new pre-orders, the origin of my favourite film series in 4K, and some cool looking Shaw Bros Jimmy Bond rip-offs.
I was very happy to discover and buy a copy of this classic today…featuring beautiful performances from John Hurt, and Richard Burton…sadly, in his last starring film role.
Also: Some Wild West supernatural action…
Some horror in preparation for Halloween next month…
I believe the ‘Red Sun’ blu ray has some vintage behind the scenes material … that’s always of great interest to me.
If you’ve watched it yet, how would you rate this release ?
Hopefully I’ll be receiving ‘Red Sun’ in the Post tomorrow, Aldo. I’ll let you know what I think of it after I’ve watched it…
I may even get the 4K… To see Ursula Andres in all her glory
I saw a clip of the finale of 1984 for my Sophomore Year English class in High School and whew, what a powerful, disturbing, and complex moment. I remember Richard Burton looking a little frail at the time, but still having a presence and an evil stoic stance as O’Brien.
Danny Trejo is an excellent example of the rags to riches story - starting out as a criminal to ending up in jail and then finding his passion for acting - he’s the right model for anyone wanting to straighten out their lives.
Very nice amigo , I’m planning on picking up that Shaw Bros. set too.
Pair of 4Ks today:
Having recently been restored, the picture quality and audio quality on ‘Red Sun’ is gorgeous, and it is certainly worth picking up this BD release.
The behind the scenes footage is in black and white, runs for approx. 9 minutes, and features on- set interviews with the principal actors.
The second extra runs about 18 mins, and is all about Toshiro Mifune, and his contribution to ‘Red Sun’
All in all, a very worthwhile, beautiful-looking release…
.
Sounds fab … might just treat myself.
Many thanks, Toscano
Aside from @Toscano 's info on extra, what is the Audio and subtitles situation here?
The 4k disc has English and French audio, both in 2.0 mono LPCM. Subs are in English SDH, French, and French SDH.
Extras on the 4k disc go:
-Setting Sun: Steven Okazaki on Toshiro Mifune (20:14)
-On the Set of Red Sun - Extract From Pour le Cinéma (08:57) (French with English subs)
-Original Trailer (03:38)
The 4k steelbook comes with the Blu-ray as well, and all subs, audio and extras are identical to the 4k disc.
How does the new restoration of Red Sun compare to the old Japanese blu. I have that and always thought it looked good but is the 4k restoration a huge leap in quality?
I’ve never owned or seen the Japanese blu so I couldn’t speak to how much better or worse this release is in comparison to that one. What I can say is that, on my 50" LG television, the 4K disc doesn’t look significantly better to my eyes than the standard blu that accompanies it. Both look excellent.
