I like it but I prefer the film DILLINGER with Warren Oates.

New blu-ray:
Bought off of the second-hand market, still in its wrapping complete with HMV “5 for £30 or £8.99 each” label, for a single splendid pound. Of course, many would suggest that a Resident Evil movie for a pound is a waste of a pound, and they’d probably have a point but I’ve got the rest of them so, sod it.
Upgrade from blu-ray to slightly better blu-ray:
Upgrade from DVD to blu-ray:
More cheapos. Not quite £1 like yesterday’s find but 2 for £15 in Sainsbury’s. Not too bad. £3 better than Amazon for the same titles, and £6 better than HMV.
Does the new Blu-ray of Scarface have a scan of the original print or is it the same as the last one with the new writing? Also, what’s the sound like? Does it have the original audio?
I don’t know.
Uh, I don’t know that either. I haven’t checked it yet. It’s probably nice, good sound though, with lots of… um, noisy, soundy things happening.
I don’t know that either! What’s the original audio?
I found this, if it helps (looks like a better scan than the 2011 disc I’ve got, with the same 7.1 DTS HD MA):
The original audio as in the original sound effects. They replaced them and it sounded horrible. I prefer to watch films the way I remember them.
Don’t worry I’m sure it’ll still include the unironic use of ‘Push it the the Limit’.
Did they? I didn’t know. I’ll have to listen out for that. I’ve no idea now if I’ve ever heard the “original” audio. I don’t remember noticing that the sound effects were especially bad, ever, but perhaps I would never notice if I’ve never heard any different. Where’s this original audio, then? I had Scarface on DVD many years ago but I don’t think I ever had it prior to that (like on VHS etc.)…
EDIT There’s no way I’m putting my Scarface blu-ray on right now - I’ll definitely wake the wife up and I might wake the baby up, and then I’d be dead - but I’ve just noticed that Netflix has Scarface, and I can stick that on right now without moving off the bed. I wonder if that version has the original audio or not?
Ah, okay I don’t think that second one sounds all that bad though (full disclosure, I’m watching that YouTube video on a tablet with the sound down pretty quiet). A bit tinnier than the first one, not quite as bass heavy for sure. The first one’s definitely better but it’s not a dealbreaker for me.
It’s an odd change, though. Why did they do that, I wonder?
It’s common for a lot of films from that period. It’s to create new 5.1 soundtracks for films that originally had mono and stereo tracks in order to make them sound more contemporary. They did it with the Dollars films as all spaghetti fans know and the worst example is probably The Terminator. I haven’t bothered buying it on Blu-ray because it sounds too different from the original.
Oh, is that all it is? The change from 2.0/1.0 to 5.1 etc? I was hoping it was something more interesting/demented like a studio exec somewhere saying, “Do you think those machine guns sound a bit too… machine gunny?” or “Maybe if we made the gunfire sound like champagne corks we could strike a cross-promotional deal with the people at Dom Pérignon”.
Was The Terminator similarly afflicted then? I guess I don’t get too caught up in these audio issues because I’ve only got a 2.1 soundbar/bass unit. It’s a decent sounbar as soundbars go but everything sounds the same: Always good enough but never spectacular (plus there’s always that Dialogue’s-too-quiet-Action’s-too-loud issue you get with playing 5.1 audio through a 2.0 or 2.1 setup). I used to have a 5.1 speaker set-up with a DVD player I had once but I found it all a bit of a mess with all the wires all around the room and, besides, it only really sounded effective with the volume up WAY TOO LOUD for the room size.
(with apologies for dragging the thread off-topic)
The Terminator is by far the worst example - the guns & explosion sounds are a total joke. Jaws also had its audio changed, but not as badly.
I am going to completely controversial and admit that I like the 1931 Howard Hawks version of SCARFACE better than the De Palma one.
Same.
Glad I’m not the only one.
