Deucember - the exploitation movie marathon

DEUCEMBER 2020

Day 8

Killer Nun (Berruti / 1978)

image

Murder, morphine addiction and rumpy pumpy. Just another day at a nun run hospital it would seem and why not. What would a grindhouse challenge be without some nunsploitation? Supersleaze to the fore in this one and enough smutty sinning to wear out at least a couple of confessionals.

Day 9

Baba Yaga (Farina / 1973)

Occult was my genre of the day and this one had been sitting on my “to watch” pile for a very long time so glad to have the excuse to give it a spin. Watched the Shameless DVD which was a pretty nice transfer and according to the director the closest to his original cut possible. It was a lot artier than I expected but a nice mix of witch based erotica and comic book visuals which I quite enjoyed. Quite a nice surprise really.

Day 10

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (Hough / 1974)

image

I’ve done Blaxploitation this month, Nunsploitation and Skatesploitation (who knew that was a thing?) so why not Carsploitation?

This film has fond memories for me as I saw it at the Drive-In in Australia back in 1975. This was during my first visit to OZ and the place I was staying only had Drive-In cinemas so I went quite a lot. I saw Star Wars for the first time there and the Trinity films (presumably on a re-run) and Man With the Golden Gun amongst others and I used to really love the experience. Those Drive-Ins have all gone now. Built over with housing as the land increased in value and the revenues for the Drive Ins declined but while they lasted they were fantastic. Happy memories. The film is just one long car chase really and I’m not that much of a car guy but it has Susan George looking great so that was more than enough for me.

I’m also doing this. Here’s my list: ‎Deucember 2020, a list of films by mavuku • Letterboxd

Here’s what I’ve seen so far:

It’s amazing how Todd Haynes managed to make convincing biopic, bona fide documentary of important disorder and give strong psycho-social commentary, all in 43 minutes with Barbie dolls as actors. Too bad there are no decent copies of this.

Episodic animated postcard from the early American 70’s: sexual liberalization, gender battle, drugs, race trouble, social unrest, radical political ideas, violence…

It’s funny how the movie at the same time give viewers what they want - sex & nudity, gore & violence, vigilante justice - and parodize it.

We Slavs have actually indebted the horror genre a lot with our folklore from which both werewolves and vampires come. But very few horror films were made in Yugoslavia. I finally looked at one of the more famous ones. Butterfly is a film based on a short story by Milovan Glišić called After 90 years about the Serbian vampire Sava Savanović, which was published in 1880, 17 years before Stoker’s Dracula. Butterfly is a good film, that gothic folklore with a Slavic flair is finely conveyed. Wicker Man and the recent The Witch can serve as coordinates. There are plot holes (mostly where the story of the film differs from Glišić’s story), but in folk stories from which nightmares are made, rational and logical is not the most important anyway.

Badass 80s mustache, tits, parody of detective movies with obligatory voiceover, private dick that can’t shoot but sure can score, tits, slapstick comedy with hillbilly family, race cars, drag races and drag queens, tits, on second thought, the movie is actually pretty gay friendly, least because of the gay character in it, more tits, Californian dream, Agatha style roundup for whodunnit denouement. Um, something is missing. Yeah, give me all those tits one more time.

I would have had a blast watching this as a kid.

Great way to kick off, probably best blaxploitation movie, I was thinking of rewatching it this Deucember myself. However I’ve decided to go with the one I haven’t see in the blax spot: Buckatown (1975) (and I’ll scratch my Pam itch with Big Dolls House too).

Great Morricone number. I like Mike Patton cover too.

Torso sits on #18 on my giallo list, and Duckling on #28 (those are good positions  )

And this one is on #40.

Yes, it’s not bad. I count it as giallo, and it’s actually higher on my list than 2 Fulci ones mentioned above, #20.

That sure sounds like an interesting list! Do you know if there is any way to share it? I’m really interested in finding new ones ( so far I have seen a little above 20 giallos )

Thanks! :+1:

I wasn’t going to have a any film challenge after spagvember but it seems I’m having at least small Francember as last 5 films I’ve seen have been Jess Franco films. And I think they qualify for deucember.

Phollastia
-Eh, probably worst Franco film I’ve seen. Just smutty 80’s porn. Only worth watching because of Lina Romay.

Les Chatouilleuses
-Light sex comedy. Not that terrible but I’d say that without Lina this one would have been pretty painful to watch through.

The Blood of Fu Manchu
-First Fu Manchu film I’ve seen. Haven’t seen any of those 30’s films either. I wasn’t really overwhelmed but good enough entertainment to watch once. A little bit of nudity and bondage reminds that it’s a Franco film but It’s still pretty restrained. Of course it’s Christoper Lee who is the real reason to see these films.

The Castle of Fu Manchu
-Similar stuff as the previous film but less raunchy. Jess Franco himself plays one of the roles as indifferent police chief.

Daughter of Dracula
-That’s more like it. Not among Franco’s finest films but good example of his erotic horror films. Britt Nichols was so stunning that it’s a shame she stopped acting so soon. Howard Vernon plays the Dracula who doesn’t even ever rise from his coffin. Jess Franco does the best acting part as a cuckolded husband.

Day 11

Goliath & the Vampires (Gentilomo (Corbucci) / 1961)

image

Never really been a big fan of Peplum but as I work through the genres it only seemed right to include one for Deucember. This one’s possibly one of the better ones in some ways and if I put my Saturday Morning Pictures head on I can enjoy its simple qualities well enough. Apparently directed in part by Sergio Corbucci but you really wouldn’t know if you weren’t told.

Finishing (ahem) watching Koch Films’ Emanuelle box with “Emanuelle around the world”. Always dug these films, not because of their own merit but because of the contemporary spirit they embody, and of course because of Laura

Day 12

Massacre Gun (Hasebe / 1967)

It’s Yakuza today so went for the Arrow BluRay of this Shishido Jo Nikkatsu classic which turned out to be a really good choice. Super stylish and beautifully shot in black & white. Visually very striking and inventive at times and the Blu does it real justice. Really enjoyed this one.

Day 13

Delitto in Formula Uno (B. Corbucci / 1984)

Comedy this time and a chance to watch the last Nico Giraldi film I hadn’t seen before. At least I think I’ve seen them all now. They tend to blend in after a while. They are certainly an acquired taste and I’m not a massive fan but somehow have become quite fond of them. This one is genuinely quite funny in parts although I think the funniest thing for me was the cheap imitation race cars standing in for F1s. More like souped up go karts and look particularly obvious next to the stock footage of a genuine race meet cut in between. I had fun with it anyway which I guess is the point right?

can’t go wrong with Milian, he can even save Bruno’s movies

Day 14

X-312 Flight to Hell (Franco / 1971)

image

And for a disaster movie why not a Jess Franco disaster movie?
It may be low on explosions and terror but makes up for it with bare breasts. Also, important life lesson, if you are stranded in the jungle with a bag full of jewels keep Fernando Sancho at arm’s length. Actually quite enjoyed this despite it’s obvious budget induced shortcomings. Airport it isn’t but I’ve seen much worse.

Day 15

Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (Deodato / 1976)

Poliziotteschi today so a good excuse to finally watch the 88Films BluRay I’ve had sitting in it’s wrapper since I bought it a year or so back. First saw this film at a screening in London where Ruggero Deodato was present and spoke before hand. It’s non-stop, no holds barred action in the way only Italian crime films know how and clips along accordingly. It’s by no means the best Polizio but good fun and a good starring role for Ray Lovelock. Deucember will give me an opportunity to watch a few more Lovelock flicks I think as I work through the genres.
