Compañeros / Vamos a matar, compañeros (Sergio Corbucci, 1970)

Yes, that last sentence is what prompted my reply. If anyone has the bluray to confirm this for region 1 (and whether or not selecting this track also includes the subtitles over the Italian only scenes), that would be appreciated.

well my text was based on checking the USA Blue Underground BluRay disc, so what I wrote isn’t wrong. I can re-check for you later today if you want, give me 1 or two hours.

I trust your review. The Blue Underground DVD is very nice in that it includes subtitles over the Italian parts without having to turn on/off subtitles in general. If that uncut English track you mentioned functions the same way, that would be great.

just to be sure, I am talking about the BluRay, not the DVD. What this reviewer on Amazon refers to may well be the DVD, and that one may not include the long version in English, Amazon is sloppy like that, and I do not have the DVD to compare to.

Ok so I am putting in the BU BluRay disc
After the company logo I can select “companeros English version 115mins” or “Vamos a matar companeros Italian version 119mins”.
If I select the 119min version English is an option in the Setup menu (as is Italian, and optional English subtitles for Italian version).
Chapter Stop 3 is a good example for a sequence that is in Italian with English subtitles, apparently a scene missing from the US cut.
But… alas… otherwise where English audio exists, you can hear it

Edit: I fine tuned the description in our database, to make this more clear.

It’s true, Amazon can be tricky like that. Unless Blue Underground DVD listed as an option is different from mine (which is uncut), he should be talking about the Bluray. There is another review on there more recent (2023) stating that there are no English subtitles.

If this bluray was clumsily assembled without the same type of track I have on the DVD, then I will just wait for a better bluray release.

Oh sorry, posted before I saw your last reply. Thank you for the info!

Also submitted an Amazon review I typed really quickly. So buy it without doubt

The Blu-Ray not only suffers from noise reduction, but a very poor scan with lots of scanner noise, so a brand new scan would have to be done to get a good Blu Ray.

I really like Companeros. I tend to rewatch Il Mercenario more often due to the tighter pacing and slightly more serious tone, but both are top-tier action spaghettis. Companeros has many great action scenes, and some funny ones as well. However, some of the scenes, such as the comedy bits with Milias that take place in the U.S., could have been omitted, in my opinion.

Personally, I really like both the English and Italian versions of the film. The Italian version, in addition to having a solid extra scene at the start, has a very balanced rythm, which I find very pleasing, whereas the English one manages to accentuate the cultural differences between the three protagonists (even if none of them have remotely accurate accents), and it´s always a pleasure to hear the actors´ original voices.

With spaghetti westerns, I usually only watch a film in either English or Italian, whichever I prefer for the given film, out of habit, but Companeros is the only one that comes to mind where I usually rotate between watching in Italian and English.

While the film is perhaps a bit uneven, it truly is a lot of fun, and Corbucci was clearly a very good spaghetti western director. I haven´t seen that many from him, but from the ones I have, I would rank them the following:

Il Grande Silenzio
Django
Il Mercenario
Compañeros
Le Specialiste
I Crudeli
Navajo Joe
