Seems like the new UHD will include the extended cut only…
As far as I know it was restored in 1995, maybe for a (limited?) theatrical release in Italy, maybe only for film-festivals, and then only that version was used for the first Italian DVD.
It was soon on German TV (in 1998, it was easy to do as they could use the old German dub, and had only to newly dub 1 or 2 lines), and interestingly it was for that not marketed as DC, but as an “special version found in the archives of Sergio Leone”.
It’s a missed opportunity not to do a definitive version that covers the various options–particularly one without the rising scene. If i recall, the “extended” cut isn’t actually the longest version out there.
I’m praying that when Pat Garret & Billy the Kid finally gets a blu-ray releas that we’ll have all the options included. My hunch is that the Australian label Imprint will be the one to get it done (with the help of Mike Siegel of course). For example, their recent release of Cross of Iron is awesome.
Yeah the aforementioend Italian cut must be a few minutes longer, but if I remember a comparison on schnittberichte.com correctly, it’s mostly the sum of many many tiny longer cuts and camera angles, not so much actually new material.
But what does extended cut mean?
The long special version with 178 min?
Or the one which was connected with Scorsese, which included about 20 sec extra.
Whatever, if the Rising scene is included I stay with my DVD as long as it looks good enough on my TV.
165min, the same as on the bluray previously
If the ‘Rise of Harmonica’ (or any other scene) is so off-putting to some, why not just edit it out ? … with all the software available today, you don’t have to be, Nino Baragli, to make a few snips
