Carry On Films

I have all the Carry On films. Great fun!

I actually enjoyed this one a lot more than I was expecting. Very much in the sex comedy style and a farce by structure yet somehow it had a gentler, more old fashioned Carry On feel to it. The fashions, furniture and interior design of 1970 Britain is also a treat to behold and the jokes all work pretty well. This isn’t necessarily a classic but will get a far higher rating than I would have predicted.[/quote]

Imogen Hassall (Jennie Grub in Carry On Loving) was also the Mexican lady in El Condor. She committed suicide at the age of 38. Tragic. :frowning:

Did you ever complete the run, Phil? Dick, Behind, England, Emmannuelle, Columbus?

Not yet, no.
I started watching Carry On Dick a while back but the disc crapped out and I was enjoying so little I haven’t managed to bring myself to get a new copy. I will complete it but it might take a while yet as there are definitely diminishing returns at this stage of the series.

I have them all except Columbus.

Carry On Girls, Behind, Constable, Matron, Camping and At Your Convenience are my personal favourites. Carry On Cowboy and Up the Khyber are great fun, too.

Forgot how much I love Carry On Again Doctor. They couldn’t make comedies as good as these nowadays.

The carry on films for me are a mixed bag. I think it’s fair to say that you have The Good the Bad and the Ugly in terms of quality, but my two favourites are carry on screaming and carry on cleo.

Two new Carry On… movies in the pipeline, apparently:

Good idea? Terrible idea?

Doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. I’ve only watched, let’s say, 5 percent of the movies, I’ll never get to 10% if they start makeing new movies

It depends on the writing and the cast, but probably not a good idea.

The last few Carry On films were not the best in the series and with most of the original actors dead, it sounds a dud idea to me.

Bad idea…!!

Don’t do a Frankenstein, and attempt to revive something that should be dead and buried.

The last effort - ’ Carry on Columbus’ (1992) was poo!
According to IMDB, it has a rating of 2.9!
By the way, if any amigos go on to IMDB, and check out this travesty, they can click on ‘Trivia’, and learn some very interesting facts about the film. These facts are more interesting that the film!

As for reviving the film franchise,…don’t bother…

In 2004, I had a telephone interview with Kenneth Cope, for my local magazine.
Kenneth appeared in ‘Carry on at your Covenience’; and ‘Carry on Matron’. As well as the ‘Carry On’ films, Kenneth was most probably better known for playing ‘Marty Hopkirk’, in ‘Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased).
I asked him about his experiences of ‘Carry On’.
The actual quotes from Kenneth are packed away in my files…but - from memory - he said that it would be very difficult to re-vive the ‘Carry On’ franchise’…if only for the fact that you cannot, nowadays, get the calibre of comedy actor now that you could in the 1960’s - 70’s. He specifically named his wonderful experiences of working with the magnificent Sid James (Ha! Ha! Ha!); and Kenneth Williams etc.

Recently, the BBC announced that it would be re-making several classic comedy sit-com episdes - including ‘Steptoe & Son’; ‘Till Death Us Do Part’: ‘Hancock’s Half Hour’; ‘Porridge’; ‘Are You Being Served’…WHY?

It seems, to me, at least, that these were (and will always be) - shining diamonds of quintessential age of comedy…BBC, stop trying to revive the memories of a generation…

Whatever the outcome of both the ‘Carry On’ film proposal, and the BBC sitcoms, I think that we can rest assured that the ‘P.C.’ Brigade will B…ks this up!
Adios, amigos…I think I’ll go and stick a favourite ‘Carry On’ in the DVD player…just to re-live the ’ good old days’…

Loved the Carry On gang as a kid. Most of it thiugh went over my head as a kid watching them.

Indeed. And, as an adult, there’s so much more to enjoy as well as the double-entendres; the broad, silly nature of the comedy belies some truly magnificent performances, real masterclasses of timing and delivery.

Liked them as a kid, so ,so with most of them these days.
