[Blu-ray] Latest and Upcoming Releases 📀

I wasn’t aware of these issues - actually I put the bad day-for-night scenes down as usual poor post-production work (Alex Cox actually criticises them in his book)!

The Japanese DVD has some of the scenes looking darker which makes more sense as far as I am concerned. For example the scene where Burt takes out the guards on top of the train when the bandits make camp for the night.

Not that I can say for sure it is supposed to look like that but like I said it simply makes sense (to me) considering what is happening.

The Japanese DVD was was licensed from MGM so I assume the source is the same but it is simply an older scan and at the time somebody probably knew how the scenes were supposed to be graded. And then when they made the newer scan (which is on all other DVDs and Blu-Rays) they forgot or didn’t care anymore. :stuck_out_tongue: I think Stanton or someone mentioned in some thread here years ago that the German TV version has the scenes looking like the Japanese DVD? Or at least not like the other discs. :stuck_out_tongue:

As for the audio, it is of course a very minor issue but Koch did fix it for their DVD release (but it is again incorrect on their Blu-Rays).

Couple of extra screenshots:

But as you can see from the below screenshots the discs look the same at other times. So they intentionally changed certain scenes but based on what info I do not know.

Anyways I am just speculating so… :o (but the only way you’ll convince me otherwise is if Sergio Corbucci himself comes and says the other discs are correct  )

Japanese dvd is the one I always view for the reasons you mention.

Yes, my old VHS recording from TV has the scenes filtered as night scenes.

It is odd that these day for night stuff wasn’t always made like it was intended already on the camera negative. That leaves the creators of a new master with the task to do it right, like the director once intended it.

Ognuno per se is another case. The scene in which Heflin is robbed at a river bank is set in broad daylight in the German TV version, was but is set in a very dark night on the Koch DVD. Much darker than the scenes in Navajo Joe, in fact so dark that many details get lost in the black.

DVDBeaver review of Kino’s BD of A Reason to Live, A Reason to Diehttp://www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-ray_reviews_68/a_reason_to_live_a_reason_to_die_blu-ray.htm: it looks only OK and it’s the cut, 90 mins version, not the 118 mins, which leads me to think it’s probably not worth picking up (a conclusion I’ve made about most of Kino’s Spaghetti Western releases sadly).

I had pre-ordered the Kino’s Monte Walsh blu ray and amazon has already dropped the price. I might wait and see if they drop the price on the others once they are released.

Yep and it is a damn shame too!

I never understood how they fixed it for the DVD but then neglected to do so for the BD. Weird… ???

Didn’t see this mentioned (apologies if it already has been) but StudioCanal are releasing Red Sun on blu-ray, on Oct 19 2015…

Scheduled for Nov 24 (not Spaghetti but…)

Never thought those two westerns would get the HD treatment.

The German BD of A Bullet for the General looks not too great, seems to be filtered or even DNR’ed: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/multi_comparison.php?disc1=6367&disc2=6368&cap1=60154&cap2=60164&art=full&image=7&hd_multiID=2600&action=1&lossless=#vergleich

Is it any different to the Blue Underground release?

Well I guess it could be much worse (I’m looking at you Raro)… :stuck_out_tongue: As far as I can remember the BU disc is basically the same shit and I assume it is just one more scan from the bad Italian labs. Maybe something has been done to it after the scan but BU and Koch probably did nothing because of how similar their discs are (according to my bad memory  ). I may even have both discs if you want confirmation.
