keep my older one

These are the 20 best SWs in my book. I leave out Leone’s films, as everything made by him is better than everything made by everybody else, and some other films not strictly SWs (made by a European director in Italy and/or Spain 1964 – 1977 set in North America 1860 – 1917).

  1. Django
  2. Il Grande silenzio
  3. Faccia a faccia
  4. La Resa dei conti
  5. Companeros
  6. Une cord, un colt
  7. Tepepa
  8. El Precio de un hombre
  9. Quien Sabe
  10. 10.000 dollari per un massacro
  11. La Taglia è tua… l’uomo l’ammazzo io
  12. Keoma
  13. Sartana non perdona
  14. Il Mercenario
  15. California
  16. Corri, uomo, corri
  17. Los Buitres cavarán tu fosa
  18. Sentenza di morte
  19. Se sei vivo spara

Morgan, if I shall include your list in our big list, I must beg you to include the Leone films, otherwise it can’t count.

Use this one then.

  1. Once Upon a Time in the West
  2. A Fistful of Dollars
  3. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

An excellent list, but the second position of A Fistful of Dollars (above The Good, the Bad & The Ugly) surprises me.

Ok, thanks.

Well, at least not every Leone is better than any other SW.

What about Leone’s 6th western My Name Is Nobody? Not as good?

hmmm, Boot Hill still didn’t make it into the TOP 20

Maybe one day.

I think I may make November top 20 month, and watch a potential top entry every day for placement on a newly revised list

Right, it’s been 5 months since my last Big 20. I should really give it another month but I can’t see it changing too drastically between now and then, so:

  1. Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (The Good, the Bad & the Ugly) (Sergio Leone, 1966)
  2. Per qualche dollaro in più (For a Few Dollars More) (Sergio Leone, 1965)
  3. La resa dei conti (The Big Gundown) (Sergio Sollima, 1966)
  4. Se sei vivo spara (Django Kill… If You Live, Shoot!) (Giulio Questi, 1967)
  5. Sentenza di morte (Death Sentence) (Mario Lanfranchi, 1968)
  6. I giorni dell’ira (Day of Anger) (Tonino Valerii, 1967)
  7. Da uomo a uomo (Death Rides a Horse) (Giulio Petroni, 1967)
  8. Keoma (Enzo G. Castellari, 1976)
  9. Réquiem para el gringo (Duel in the Eclipse) (José Luis Merino, 1968)
  10. Requiescant (Kill and Pray) (Carlo Lizzani, 1967)
  11. La taglia è tua… l’uomo l’ammazzo io (El Puro) (Edoardo Mulargia, 1969)
  12. Per un pugno di dollari (A Fistful of Dollars) (Sergio Leone, 1964)
  13. Mannaja (A Man Called Blade) (Sergio Martino, 1977)
  14. Une corde, un colt (Cemetery Without Crosses) (Robert Hossein, 1969)
  15. 10.000 dollari per un massacro (10,000 Dollars For a Massacre) (Romolo Guerrieri, 1967)
  16. Il Mercenario (The Mercenary) (Sergio Corbucci, 1968)
  17. Django (Sergio Corbucci, 1966)
  18. Il pistolero dell’Ave Maria (The Forgotten Pistolero) (Ferdinando Baldi, 1969)
  19. Vamos a matar, compañeros i (Sergio Corbucci, 1970)
  20. Faccia a faccia (Face to Face) (Sergio Sollima, 1967)

There. And if that list gets any sexier I’m going to have to rent it a hotel room and see it on the side behind the wife’s back.
Ok, thanks.

Duck, you Sucker! is still better than any of the other Mexican revolution SWs. A better film than Django by a long shot. But i like Django more… My Name is Nobody was, i think, directed by Tonino Valerii. Anyway, not as good, too light-hearted. Well made and great fun though.

Me too, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly obviously being the better film. A Fistful of Dollars even has flaws, something hard to come by in Leone’s later films. Still I like Fistful more. The ultimate SW, in a certain sense.

List of SW actors with at least 3 appearances in current Top 20 films (errors and omissions excepted):

Benito Stefanelli, Lorenzo Robledo 9

Aldo Sambrell, Frank Braña 7

Mario Brega, José Canalejas, Antonio Molino Rojo 6

Lee Van Cleef, Tomas Milian, Ricardo Palacios, Alvaro de Luna 5

Gian Maria Volonté, Franco Nero, Luigi Pistilli, José Torres, José Terron, Antonio Casas, Romano Puppo, Simon Arriaga, Spartaco Conversi 4

Clint Eastwood, Klaus Kinski, Edoardo Fajardo, Nello Pazzafini, Angel Alvarez, Roberto Camardiel, Al Mulock, Bruno Corazzari, Raf Baldassarre, Roman Ariznavarreta, Calisto Calisti, Guillermo Mendez, Remo De Angelis, Claudio Scarchilli, Ivan Scratuglia 3
Well-known names like Gemma, Wolff, Berger and Sancho reach the 2 films mark. As for Fortunato Arena, who as far as I know holds the record with around 80 (!) SW appearances, he’s in The Great Silence and, funnily, in all four films between 21st and 24th place!

I really like Duck, you Sucker although it’s Leones weakest genre entry IMO. I prefer Damiani’s Quién sabe? over Duck you Sucker.

I’m probably biased when it comes to Leone’s films. The two films have much in common though. I came across Quién sabe? for the first time on TV sometime in the eighties. Then I thought it acceptable, today it is a favorite. Leone is probably indebted to it.

I will update the forum’s tip top 20 list in one of the next days.

If some will revise their lists, now’s the time. Or even some might dare to post their first list.

And what about our top scorer Ennio? 10 years and not one little list, boy, that’s so pathetic …
