Need help finding a cavalry film

Hi my father keeps telling me there is a film he is looking for, here are the scant details he provided:

  1. Cavalry themed movie
  2. Black and white
  3. May or may not have a younger John Wayne in it
  4. Diplomacy breaks down between senators and Native American nations leading to war
  5. US sends 3 divisions (columns?) of separate cavalry to fight the war and eventually win
  6. It’s very epic in scope, much bigger than The Horse Soldiers
  7. It’s not “They Died with their Boots on” or “Fort Apache”

I’ve been trying to find this for a while now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just digging up this topic, I hope someone can point you in the right direction. I watched a few cavalry/Indian westerns recently but from the description that doesn’t ring a ell.

It’s not Fort Apache with Henry Fonda and John Wayne, right?

nope, he already said it’s not that

Rio Grande (1950)?

The Telegraph Trail from the early '30s?

Or maybe She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949, Technicolor)?

In future, I’m going to read every sentence before I reply.

Some black and white cavalry westerns that I know:

Fort Courageous
Fort Bowie
Only the Valiant

They’re not epics, however, so I doubt it’s any of those. As JonathanCorbett says, it could be Rio Grande. Rio Grande always felt longer than it actually is.

The guy who asked wasn’t in the forum since 2 years, so to whom you answer?
