Ace High / I quattro dell’Ave Maria (Giuseppe Colizzi, 1968)

Another Great Performance by Eli Wallach, and the excellent pairing of Hill & Spencer. The 2nd in a trilogy & this one’s the best.

I loved this movie but the only thing was, missing parts of the movie first how did eli wallach and bud spencer get caught(firingsquad)? And where the hell did terrance hill go at the mexican fiesta when bud spencer got drunk?

Another excellent effort from Colizzi, Where GF…ID was a good but fairly standard SW, ACE HIGH leaves the beaten path just a bit; when one of the first brawls break out, a marching band comes out of nowhere with a band leader bopping people on the head in time to the music. In the next town we are introduced to a high wire act, at a fiesta Spencer has a hallucination after a strong drink, and in the final town we see a game of billiards played on horseback. Though this one is still serious in tone, we do see some early rumblings of the Trinity boys. Hill sleeps while traveling by horseback and by wagon (apparently he hasn’t built his litter yet). And Bud uses some of his signature moves in the brawls. This time 'round we get the welcome addition of Eli Wallach as the Greek, Cacopoulos. He has recently been liberated from jail by a crooked banker, only to kill said banker because he and two others where responsible for Eli being in jail in the first place. On his way to get revenge on the other two who done him wrong, he stops to rob Hill and Spencer (which is what the banker wanted him to do in the first place). So now we have Eli looking for revenge, and Hill and Spencer are looking for Eli. They follow the trail of money until they catch up with Eli, at which point they inadvertantly help him get revenge on ex-friend #2. Eli escapes from them and by the time they catch up with him again, he has a plan to get their money back and his revenge all in one fell swoop. The whole affair winds up with a fun 4 on 5 showdown in a casino after they run a scam on the place. I liked this one even better than GF…ID, the only thing missing was the slam-bang opening of the first. RE: the missing parts, i have no idea how Bud and Eli got caught by the firing squad, but when Hill leaves the fiesta, Eli alludes to sending him on a wild goosechase looking for himself. Perhaps the missing 10 minutes explain this better.

Fun Factor - 8

I’m going to hold off on watching BOOT HILL since i do not have a widescreen copy yet, and Colizzis film look to be very well shot to my eye.

I much prefer this one to “God forgives…” but then I do have a penchant for slow-paced movies. I haven’t seen “Boot Hill” so can’t rate the trilogy fully yet.

Does anyone have any more specifics than already mentioned on what is cut from the Paramount version?

Only small parts of scenes. But many of therm.

Well, at least if the cuts are the same as in the german version. If you are not too familiar with the film you won’t spot the differences.

Great cast but limited by it’s lack of story. Haven’t seen Boot Hill yet but have seen a poor quality version of God Forgives & liked it. I’d say that the majority 3 star rating is accurate.

I blind bought this andwas initially disappointed.Thoughtit went all over the place without explaining much.

After a much awaited anddeserved second viewing, I liked it so much better. Good pacing and I love Colizzi’s style.

The Hill & Spencer Focus is still in the freezer, but the review of this film has arrived

I’m afraid forum member Ace High loves the movie more than I do, but I hope he’ll be happy the read my thoughts on it anyway

Long time don’t see this one. I’m not very fond of Collizi’s, I mean “God forgives… I don’t” is great, but then he seems to loose the “magic”. Despite that I must agree that Spencer wins the credits in this one.

In my opinion its the best Colizzi, but i like all three, wish he would have made some more stuff

I gave it 4 stars. I like it a bit more than God forgives. The other Colizzi does not exist for me ;D

The same here, four stars,too
I guess you’re not alone with refusing ‘Boot hill’,i also had to accustom myself on it

By the way , can anyone correct the pool?

Just added this poster to the database. I do not particularly enjoy the funny ones.

Superb Review,Scherps
It comes to the right time, much better than the boring newspaper

Nice, i like that poster quite a bit.

Saw it finished now, i did not remember the last time i saw it i know I rented the Tape but it must have been 20years ago.

Did not liked that much. The acting it’s first class from Wallach of course, Hill and Spencer do not have do to a great acting effort to look cool, Brock Peters and Kevin Macharty deserved the trrip to Almeria, and made the film more costumer friendly to the American public.
But there’s to many histories in the film, and the director wanted to give it a go to almost all the SW types, Zapata westerns, heist movie, revenge movie, and some times parts of GBU, too many things and no sense of direction turns the film two long and I lost interest in the film almost till the end where the final showdown and finally the storyline goes normal. Should made it shorter and focused in one thing. Wasted the talent of Wallach and the presence of Hill and Bud

2 out of 5

Good movie.
I think E. Wallach somewhat exaggerated.
He reminds me of his overacting to Milian.
Compared to “God forgives … I do not” a little humor to come.
Nevertheless, I think the first film by Colizzi is better.
This is perhaps a few minutes too long.
But as I said, good movie.
My rating 8 / 10.
Perhaps only 7 / 10.
I must him look at it again.
